{"id":9332,"date":"2009-05-29T09:02:30","date_gmt":"2009-05-29T14:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=9332"},"modified":"2012-10-22T19:42:57","modified_gmt":"2012-10-23T00:42:57","slug":"ball-bashing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/29\/ball-bashing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ball Bashing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve suggested that the fact that men do not feel compelled to wear make-up is a &#8220;triumph of gender ideology over capitalism&#8221; (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/12\/make-up-and-beauty-regimes-for-men\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 Companies that sell make-up, after all, have halved their profits by giving up on selling to men.\u00a0 We should expect, then, a tug-of-war between the profit motive and a gender ideology that suggests that men and women are opposite.\u00a0\u00a0 On the one hand, if men and women are opposites, then the requirement that women primp and preen (with the help of dozens of products) would imply that men do not.\u00a0 On the other hand, if they accept this gender binary, companies lose half their customers.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, Gwen and I were shocked to see an ad at <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5271561\/trend-alert-clean+shaven-balls\" target=\"_blank\">Jezebel<\/a>, sent in by Frank D., overtly marketing scrotum shaving.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9333\" title=\"philipsthumb52709\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/philipsthumb52709.jpg\" alt=\"philipsthumb52709\" width=\"275\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/philipsthumb52709.jpg 275w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/philipsthumb52709-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have seen this a bit with products aimed at men and their hair already (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/28\/body-hair-makes-you-an-ape\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/24\/7964\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/04\/08\/touch-of-gray-mens-hair-dye-for-that-distinguished-look\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>), but I&#8217;m still surprised to see this.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine anything harder to shave on anyone&#8217;s body, male or female.<\/p>\n<p>So how are they trying to convince men to do it?<\/p>\n<p>They are using the same tactics that they use against women.\u00a0 They are either (1) shaming men into thinking that they are disgusting and no woman (or man) will have them unless they alter their body (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/29\/shave-or-men-will-never-find-it\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/24\/anxiety-about-objectionable-hair-money-in-someones-pocket\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/19\/guest-post-your-hairy-legs-could-be-mass-murderers-even-now\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>) or (2) naturalizing shaving such that it is just a fun thing that all men inevitably participate in (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/12\/19\/nair-hair-removal-products-for-teens\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/04\/mow-the-lawn\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/21\/civilize-your-bush\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/11\/advertising-against-bush\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Check out the second paragraph in this screen shot of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.malepubichairshaving.net\/how-to-shave-your-balls\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Norelco-Phillips website<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9362\" title=\"capture5\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/capture5.jpg\" alt=\"capture5\" width=\"559\" height=\"493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/capture5.jpg 771w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/capture5-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Did you know that women like men who shave down there? <\/em>Having silky smooth balls is a lot nicer than finding a huge bush or choking on your pubes! \u00a0 Today&#8217;s trend is to have it clean or at least trimmed.\u00a0 This helps both aesthetically and hygienic wise as well.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They are also using a gendered logic.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen this with other examples of companies trying to sell self-maintenance to men.\u00a0 They hyper-masculinizing the product.\u00a0 For examples, see our posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/30\/redken-for-men-masculinizing-beauty-products\/\" target=\"_self\">hair product for men<\/a> (with &#8220;stand tough&#8221; hair gel), <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/12\/make-up-and-beauty-regimes-for-men\/\" target=\"_self\">make-up for men<\/a> ( with &#8220;blo-job bronzing powder&#8221;).\u00a0 We see this with other feminized products and activities too (for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/19\/skate-canada-gets-tough\/\" target=\"_self\">ice skating<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/12\/um-what\/\" target=\"_self\">chocolate<\/a>).\u00a0 In this case, they don&#8217;t say, &#8220;If you don&#8217;t shave your balls, you won&#8217;t be pretty.&#8221;\u00a0 They say, &#8220;When there&#8217;s no underbrush, the tree looks taller.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, no.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not paraphrasing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"data\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1TiJNewpCnY&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1TiJNewpCnY&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>One thing we might discuss is whether this this represents a &#8220;female gaze&#8221; that matches the &#8220;male gaze&#8221; that requires women to always be a pleasurable object for others to view&#8230; or that, alternatively, this is just the male gaze being applied to men.\u00a0 Some of the marketing for men&#8217;s body shaving appears to be clearly marketed towards gay men (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.braun.com\/ca\/bodycruzer\/flash\/bodycruzer.html#\/?page=bodycruze.features\" target=\"_blank\">this website<\/a>, especially <a href=\"http:\/\/www.braun.com\/ca\/bodycruzer\/flash\/bodycruzer.html#\/?page=party?popup=nationalityguide\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting thing to consider is the extent to which the social invisibility of the pubic area facilitates marketer manipulation.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re straight, unless you&#8217;re willing to ask a partner, you have to trust the advertisers to tell you what &#8220;today&#8217;s trend&#8221; is.\u00a0 What a great deal for the companies.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and, I&#8217;m wondering which you think is going to win this tug-of-war: the companies with their profit motive or gender ideology and a resistance to the feminization of men?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
