I was first driven to do so when I saw this at the Million Aire (private plane terminal) at the Burbank airport:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9211 aligncenter\" title=\"cimg1256\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/cimg1256-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"cimg1256\" width=\"454\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/cimg1256-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/cimg1256-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That&#8217;s right. You are looking at pink chocolate chips cooked into cookies to signify a commitment to reducing breast cancer-related morbidity and mortality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anti-breast cancer messages are, I think inarguably, the most widely product-linked disease-related message ever.\u00a0 I am constantly shocked by how many products have a breast cancer version. breast cancer-themed limo (note the pink ribbon hanging from the rear view mirror):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9610\" title=\"cimg3549\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/cimg3549.jpg\" alt=\"cimg3549\" width=\"510\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NEW (May &#8217;10)! <\/strong><\/span>Ren\u00e9e Y. sent along this photo of breast cancer-awareness-themed grape tomatoes.\u00a0 I repeat: grape tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/IMG_0840.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-24113\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/IMG_0840-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"398\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We&#8217;ve discussed the commodification of activism extensively (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/04\/wars-a-bore\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/11\/the-white-womans-burden\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/08\/20\/im-saving-the-planet-what-are-you-doing\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/20\/help-others-by-spending-money-on-yourself\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/22\/ethos-water-another-example-of-consumption-marketed-as-social-activism\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>) and so I&#8217;m going to skip this point.\u00a0 Instead, I&#8217;d like the ask the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What does it mean when awareness of and funding for disease is subject to marketing?\u00a0 Is this really the most efficient or rational way to set health care priorities?\u00a0 I did a bit of research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr56\/nvsr56_10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the CDC<\/a> (2005 seems to be the latest available data), cancer is not the leading cause of death.\u00a0 Heart disease is the leading cause of death.\u00a0 Granted, cancer is a close second.\u00a0 In 2005, 652,091 people died of heart disease and 559,312 died of cancer.\u00a0 But not breast cancer, all cancers.\u00a0 In 2005, 49,491 people died of breast cancer.\u00a0 More than 10 times as many people died of heart disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And, if you want to prioritize cancers, more people are diagnosed with prostate cancer than breast cancer (<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.nccd.cdc.gov\/uscs\/Table.aspx?Group=3f&amp;Year=2005&amp;Display=n\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>) and more people die from lung cancer (159,292), colon, rectal, or anal cancer (53,252), and lymphoid\/hematopoietic cancers (55,028) (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr56\/nvsr56_10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So why such an emphasis on breast cancer?\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure why.\u00a0 Certainly there is a massive social movement organization behind this anti-breast cancer marketing and people in charge have made a decision to take this approach.\u00a0\u00a0 I think, also, the body parts and the presumed cause of disease matter.\u00a0\u00a0 Do we have less sympathy (and would, therefore, a similar marketing campaign be less effective) for lung cancer because we think that lung cancer patients are to blame for their own disease?\u00a0 Would we find colo-rectal-anal cancer-themed cream cheese somehow less appetizing?\u00a0 Or prostate cancer-themed gum?\u00a0 Do lymphoid and hematopoietic cancers affect parts of the body that are simply less iconic?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9230\" title=\"saveteepink\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/saveteepink.jpg\" alt=\"saveteepink\" width=\"294\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/saveteepink.jpg 360w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/saveteepink-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/05\/saveteepink-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;Save the lymph nodes&#8221; just doesn&#8217;t have quite the same ring?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m not trying to suggest that raising awareness of and funding research for breast cancer isn&#8217;t important, but I am interested in the strategies by which being &#8220;against&#8221;
