The default avatar is &#8220;white&#8221; and appears to be\u00a0male:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8423\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/d_silhouette.gif\" alt=\"d_silhouette\" width=\"200\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the individual avatar, Facebook&#8217;s illustration of global connection uses orange avatars of both sexes:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8424\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/capture12.jpg\" alt=\"capture12\" width=\"472\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/capture12.jpg 472w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/capture12-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Evidently,&#8221; Toban writes, &#8220;the orange is supposed to be a sort of compromise skin colour.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So when Facebook wants to represent global humanity, the avatars are orange and of mixed sex; when Facebook is charged with representing an individual, the\u00a0avatar\u00a0is\u00a0white and male.\u00a0 This is not random or accidental.\u00a0 Globally, as Facebook, ironically, reminds us, people are not &#8220;white.&#8221;\u00a0 Representing people in this way centers men, Western countries, and whiteness (because there are non-white people in Western countries, too) and marginalizes women, non-Western countries, and non-whites (though one might argue that at least ALL of the avatars aren&#8217;t white and male).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">UPDATE:<\/span><\/strong> I write this update in August of 2010.\u00a0 Since then it appears that Facebook has added a generic female avatar.\u00a0 This one was sent in by Amber F.
