{"id":8351,"date":"2009-04-16T10:30:37","date_gmt":"2009-04-16T15:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=8351"},"modified":"2010-12-17T14:11:14","modified_gmt":"2010-12-17T19:11:14","slug":"the-unequal-recession-home-foreclosures-and-the-dilemma-of-the-duplex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/16\/the-unequal-recession-home-foreclosures-and-the-dilemma-of-the-duplex\/","title":{"rendered":"The Unequal Recession: Home Foreclosures and the Dilemma of the Duplex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/13\/my-rant-on-americas-recession\/\" target=\"_self\">recently posted <\/a>about how the economic downturn isn&#8217;t affecting all of us equally.\u00a0 We can say the same for the rash of home foreclosures.\u00a0 Some people, of course, are losing their homes and other&#8217;s aren&#8217;t.\u00a0 But,\u00a0in addition to that, some people are seeing the value of their homes go down more than others due to the housing crisis.\u00a0\u00a0For example, if you don&#8217;t lose your house, but lots of other people in your\u00a0neighborhood do,\u00a0the value of your house will fall moreso than the values of homes in neighborhoods with little to no foreclosure.\u00a0 Photographer Camilo Jose Vergara <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2212784\/\" target=\"_blank\">draws our attention<\/a> to yet another unequal\u00a0casualty of the housing crisis: owners of duplexes who are, disproportionately, working class and urban.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How are owners of duplexes uniquely affected by foreclosure?\u00a0 First, if the other half of your duplex is abandoned or under foreclosure,\u00a0your half is significantly devalued.\u00a0 And, second,\u00a0as Vergara writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Those living in the occupied home often have their lives made more difficult by what happens on the other side of a shared wall&#8230;\u00a0 people throw trash in the front and back yards of the vacant unit, causing foul smells and attracting rats. Physical problems in the empty shell cause accelerated decay in the occupied house. Water may be left running in the unoccupied unit, causing moisture to migrate next door. In cold weather, pipes burst. Joists rot and collapse, tearing bricks out of the shared wall.
