{"id":8309,"date":"2009-04-11T02:21:15","date_gmt":"2009-04-11T07:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=8309"},"modified":"2012-02-20T20:48:46","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T01:48:46","slug":"economic-change-and-city-vitality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/11\/economic-change-and-city-vitality\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic Change and City Vitality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The desperate economic situation of Detroit, Michigan\u00a0is in the headlines these days.\u00a0 From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/11\/23\/us\/23michigan.html?pagewanted=1\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In one sign of distress, in the first nine months of this year [2008], some 130,000 Michigan residents who had lost their jobs remained out of work so long that they ran out of regular unemployment benefits. By the middle of this month, 63,000 people (who had already run out of their ordinary maximum benefit \u2014 as many as 26 weeks, at as much as $362 a week) also ran out of an extension authorized by Congress.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This figure shows the unemployment and forclosure rate in Michigan as of Oct. 2008.\u00a0 It shows that Michigan in general, and Detroit especially, is doing much worse than the national average:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8310\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/23michigan_graphic_correx.gif\" alt=\"23michigan_graphic_correx\" width=\"541\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/23michigan_graphic_correx.gif 634w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/23michigan_graphic_correx-300x278.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s numbers reflect not just the current recession, but 30 years of decline.\u00a0 A figure from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/international\/business\/0,1518,599988,00.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Spiegel<\/em><\/a> reveals that the marketshare of U.S. automakers have been steadily dwindling:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8311\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/01020139856300.gif\" alt=\"01020139856300\" width=\"529\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Spiegel<\/em> reports that the city has lost more than half its inhabitants since the 1950s (from close to 2 million, to 917,000 in 2009).\u00a0 The tax base has plummeted and city services, in turn, have been cut.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions in Detroit are dire, and they contrast greatly with the city in the\u00a0late 1800s and early 1900s.\u00a0 Then, Detroit&#8217;s shipping and manufacturing economy, innovative for its time, made it\u00a0a rich and vibrant city.\u00a0 Today, the ruins of that vibrancy still occupy the city.<\/p>\n<p>Detroit&#8217;s main train station, opened in 1913 has not been used since 1988:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8312\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_01.jpg\" alt=\"reliques_01\" width=\"555\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_01.jpg 611w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_01-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Constructed in 1893 in the once-elegant Brush Park neighborhood, this home, designed by architect Albert Kahn, was moved from its original location several years ago by preservationists who hoped to preserve it. It was demolished last year:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8313\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_02.jpg\" alt=\"reliques_02\" width=\"563\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_02.jpg 611w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_02-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of the city&#8217;s Catholic schools have been closed, though the churches they are affiliated with remain active:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8314\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_03.jpg\" alt=\"reliques_03\" width=\"569\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_03.jpg 611w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/reliques_03-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the city&#8217;s most prominent skyscrapers, this 35-story tower once housed the offices of many doctors, lawyers and dentists. It has been virtually empty since the 1980s.
