Given that since the anti-gay-marriage Prop 8 passed in California in November, many people have argued that a) the African American community is particularly homophobic and voted against the bill (so it&#8217;s Black people&#8217;s fault Prop 8 passed) or b) gay rights organizations have failed to reach out to the African American community and win their support (so it&#8217;s elitist gay people&#8217;s fault Prop 8 passed), both positions that imply that gay rights and African Americans are at odds, I found this photo from Philadelphia (in 1972) particularly striking as a reminder that African Americans often did and do support gay rights, and the gay rights movement has often actively included them&#8230;oh yeah, and also there are gay Black people:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8214 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2431510819_5e96be8dfe.jpg\" alt=\"2431510819_5e96be8dfe\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2431510819_5e96be8dfe.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2431510819_5e96be8dfe-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an image of people picketing the White House in the 1960s in support of legislation to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians in federal employment:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8215 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2426325769_75b32819e9.jpg\" alt=\"2426325769_75b32819e9\" width=\"355\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2426325769_75b32819e9.jpg 355w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/04\/2426325769_75b32819e9-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are also quite a few vintage gay movement images mixed in to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/32912172@N00\/sets\/72157601181544773\/?page=3\">this set of photos<\/a>.
