He&#8217;s had some great stuff up lately. Here we have changes in compensation (per employee) between 1992 and 2007 for various industries, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8071 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/finpay2.png\" alt=\"finpay2\" width=\"452\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/finpay2.png 452w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/finpay2-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I do question some of these classifications&#8211;for instance, is &#8220;performing arts, spectator sports, museums, and related activities&#8221; really a coherent category? Nonetheless, it provides a relatively consistent measurement of compensation, which is useful for comparing change over time.<\/p>\n<p>I wandered over to the BLS website and ended up on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/iif\/home.htm\">Occupational Injuries and Illnesses page<\/a>. There I discovered this in the <em>National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2007<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8072 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-18.png\" alt=\"picture-18\" width=\"520\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-18.png 520w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-18-300x193.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Along with the graph, we learn,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Workplace homicides involving police officers and supervisors of retail sales workers both saw substantial increases in 2007.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Police officers makes sense. But retail supervisors? Huh. I wonder what the actual numbers are.<\/p>\n<p>From the same report we get the number and rate of fatalities by industry:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8073 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-19.png\" alt=\"picture-19\" width=\"543\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-19.png 569w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/picture-19-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 543px) 100vw, 543px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The extraction industries (mining, forestry, farming, fishing, hunting) are noticeable outliers here, with significantly higher fatality rates (though not overall numbers) than any other industries.<\/p>\n<p>So there&#8217;s some totally unconnected information about the labor force for you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, it&#8217;s another table from Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight.
