{"id":7894,"date":"2009-03-20T02:18:26","date_gmt":"2009-03-20T07:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=7894"},"modified":"2011-12-23T13:17:55","modified_gmt":"2011-12-23T18:17:55","slug":"the-orphan-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/20\/the-orphan-train\/","title":{"rendered":"The Orphan Train"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The solutions for parentless (and unparented)\u00a0children have varied tremendously over history and they vary, in part, based on the particular technological, economic, and cultural realities of the time.\u00a0 For more than 75 years, one answer was the orphan train.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the 1850s,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;thousands of children roamed the streets of New York in search of money, food and shelter&#8211;prey to disease and crime. Many sold matches, rags, or newspapers to survive.\u00a0 For protection against street violence, they banded together and formed gangs. Police, faced with a growing problem, were known to arrest vagrant children&#8211;some as young as five&#8211;locking them up with adult criminals (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/amex\/orphan\/\" target=\"_blank\">PBS<\/a>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, farmers in the country were having as many kids as they could because kids were great farm labor.\u00a0 They could\u00a0use as many hands as they could get.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, in 1853, a minister named Charles Loring Brace started the orphan train.\u00a0 Brace believed that farmers would welcome homeless children, take them into their homes, and treat them as their own. <span>\u00a0<\/span>So he rounded up the kids, got parental permission when he needed it, and took the city kids to the country.\u00a0 Between 1854 and 1929, the trains took over 100,000 children to adoptive parents in 47 states and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>On the orphan train (image <a
