{"id":7710,"date":"2009-03-15T02:17:27","date_gmt":"2009-03-15T07:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=7710"},"modified":"2010-12-23T03:53:07","modified_gmt":"2010-12-23T08:53:07","slug":"vogue-puts-a-woman-of-color-on-the-cover-and-manages-to-be-both-sexist-and-racist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/15\/vogue-puts-a-woman-of-color-on-the-cover-and-manages-to-be-both-sexist-and-racist\/","title":{"rendered":"Vogue Puts a Woman of Color on the Cover and Manages to be Both Sexist and Racist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women of color rarely grace the covers of fashion magazines like <em>Vogue<\/em>.\u00a0 And yet, for the second time this year, the <em>Vogue<\/em> cover features a woman of color, Beyonce.\u00a0 Unfortunately, in line with cultural stereotypes, the issue is the &#8220;Shape Issue,&#8221; contributing to the stereotype of Black women, and Latina women too, as especially &#8220;curvy.&#8221;\u00a0 We document the fetishization of black women&#8217;s behinds <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/26\/the-fetishization-of-black-womens-behinds\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This month, Beyonce&#8217;s cover includes stories entitled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Fashion for Every Figure: Size 0 to Size 20<\/p>\n<p>Real Women Have Curves: Beyonce at Her Best<\/p>\n<p>NIP\/TUCK: Designing a Perfect Body<\/p>\n<p>WORK IT! Longer Legs, Leaner Lines, Sexier Silhouette<\/p>\n<p>THE RIGHT SWIMSUIT FOR YOUR BODY TYPE<\/p>\n<p>WEIGHT OBSESSION: One Woman Conquers Her Diet Demons<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7709\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/beyoncecleancopy031309.png\" alt=\"beyoncecleancopy031309\" width=\"300\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/beyoncecleancopy031309.png 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/03\/beyoncecleancopy031309-217x300.png 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The magazine sets up, essentially, an impossibility: \u00a0&#8220;Have curves, but by curves we mean something very specific: boobs and an ass.\u00a0 You know, like Black women&#8217;ve got.\u00a0 See Beyonce? She&#8217;s Black.
