From urban streets that <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/The_Death_and_Life_of_Great_American_Cit.html?id=P_bPTgOoBYkC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=kp_read_button#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">encourage neighborly relationships<\/a>, to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hostiledesign.org\/\">hostile design<\/a>&#8221; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/acprof:oso\/9780195395174.001.0001\/acprof-9780195395174\">policing practices<\/a> that keep people out of public spaces, the physical structure of a space carries with it a whole set of assumptions about how people should interact in that space.<\/p>\n<p>But social structure isn&#8217;t always just imposed on us by architects and city planners. It also invites the opportunity for improvisation and innovation to create new norms. A great example of this is the emergence of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2018\/oct\/05\/desire-paths-the-illicit-trails-that-defy-the-urban-planners?CMP=fb_gu&amp;fbclid=IwAR1Wz1B91do2HyKYW-CX6IbMbj3MwjfNftqQGBVhaLFIiJRtxm4dmrdflB0\">desire paths<\/a>&#8220;\u2014the people-made paths that defy, or <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/article\/least-resistance-desire-paths-can-lead-better-design\/\">improve on<\/a>, the work of urban design.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72720\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72720\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/800px-Desire_path_19811581366-500x333.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Desire paths were the bulk of my commute for years without even realizing it. When you walk a lot, you start to see how much our neighborhoods aren&#8217;t built for this most basic kind of travel. It is fun to spot these paths along the way, because they show little pockets of collective action where people have found a better way to get from point A to B. Authors like to highlight how some universities, for example, even wait for desire paths to emerge and then pave them to fit students&#8217; commuting routes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72722\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/desire-path-usability-500x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/desire-path-usability-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/desire-path-usability-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/desire-path-usability-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2019\/03\/desire-path-usability.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, it is also important to pay attention to the limits that urban design, like all kinds of social structures, continues to impose in our communities. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/00420980701426665\">Research shows<\/a> that walkability may only be weakly related to the social health of a neighborhood, since community cohesion takes more work than just putting people in the same space. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/0042098010364859\">Walkable neighborhoods also attract more drivers<\/a> as people commute in to walk around to shops and restaurants.\u00a0My alma mater, Michigan State University, paved a ton of desire paths in student neighborhoods across campus. It was great, but if you needed to get to the <em>other side<\/em> of campus for class in a pinch, there was still the matter of that big stadium complex in the way.
