Feeling the Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valentine&#8217;s Day is upon us, but in a world of hookups and breakups many people are concerned about the state of romance. Where do Americans actually stand on sex and relationships? We took a look at some trends from the General Social Survey. They highlight an important point: while Americans are more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accepting <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of things like divorce and premarital sex, that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that both are running rampant in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, since the mid 1970s, Americans have become much more accepting of sex before marriage. Today more than half of respondents say it isn&#8217;t wrong at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph1.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72260 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph1-500x343.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these attitudes don&#8217;t necessarily mean people are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more sex.\u00a0<\/span>Y<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ounger Americans today actually report having no sexual partners more frequently than people of the same age in earlier surveys. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72259\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph2-500x348.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph2-500x348.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph2.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about marriage? Americans are more accepting of divorce now, with more saying a divorce should be easier to obtain. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph3.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72258\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph3-500x346.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph3-500x346.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph3.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean everyone is flying the coop. While self-reported divorce rates had been on the rise since the mid 1970s, they have largely leveled off in recent years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72261\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph4-500x348.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph4-500x348.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2018\/02\/Graph4.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to remember that for core social practices like love and marriage, we are extra susceptible to moral panics when faced with social change.
