In the face of such horror, many people rightly turn to their deep convictions for comfort and strength, and their leaders are no different. Referencing religion is <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/the-god-strategy-9780195326413?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\">a common\u00a0choice for politicians<\/a>, especially in troubling times. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00GMEJLJO\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1\">Experimental evidence shows<\/a>\u00a0these references draw voters in, but lately it seems like the calls for comfort may have gotten a little&#8230;rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-72007\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/tp-500x712.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/tp-500x712.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/tp-768x1093.png 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/tp-719x1024.png 719w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/tp.png 808w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For a growing number of Americans, calls for &#8220;thoughts and prayers&#8221; ring especially hollow. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/religious-landscape-study\/\">About a fifth of the U.S. population has no religious affiliation<\/a>, and new experimental research shows <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1948550617707015\">we may be drastically underestimating the number of atheists in the population as well<\/a>. Despite these trends, we don&#8217;t often seen direct challenges to religious beliefs and practices in policy debates.\u00a0Healthcare reform advocates don&#8217;t usually argue that we should keep people alive and well because &#8220;there probably isn&#8217;t an afterlife.&#8221; While the battle to legalize same sex marriage discussed the <em>separation<\/em> of church and state, we didn&#8217;t see many large advocacy groups arguing for support on the grounds that biblical claims simply weren&#8217;t true.<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of prayer, calls for concrete action on gun control in the face of mass shootings are a new challenge to these cultural norms.\u00a0In the wake of the 2015 San Bernardino shooting,\u00a0 the<em> New York<\/em> <em>Daily News <\/em>ran this cover:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-71999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/10\/god-1-e1506999088939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"523\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSNews\/status\/914916851272093697\">in press conferences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2017\/oct\/03\/democrats-speak-out-thoughts-and-prayers-are-not-enough-video?CMP=twt_gu\">on the floor of Congress<\/a>, more political leaders are openly saying that thoughts are prayers are not enough to solve this problem.
