{"id":7133,"date":"2009-02-23T23:34:34","date_gmt":"2009-02-24T04:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=7133"},"modified":"2010-12-23T03:30:51","modified_gmt":"2010-12-23T08:30:51","slug":"have-a-conversation-over-dinner-risk-obesity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/23\/have-a-conversation-over-dinner-risk-obesity\/","title":{"rendered":"Have a Conversation Over Dinner, Risk Obesity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Active Life Movement has produced these ads as part of their campaign against childhood obesity:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7134\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/activelifesuperhero-1024x655.jpg\" alt=\"activelifesuperhero\" width=\"683\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7135\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/activelifebarbie-1024x657.jpg\" alt=\"activelifebarbie\" width=\"683\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7136\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/activelifepirates-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"activelifepirates\" width=\"686\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What irks me about this ad campaign is the negative message (i.e., the implicit &#8220;don&#8217;t&#8221;).\u00a0 The message is: Don&#8217;t look like this.\u00a0 And, maybe secondarily: Don&#8217;t eat a lot, watch TV, use your computer, or have conversations (?).\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s ultimately restrictive and shaming.<\/p>\n<p>The message could be a positive one (i.e., an implicit &#8220;do&#8221;): Do go outside, play, learn to dance, enjoy nature!\u00a0 All of those would (presumably) accomplish the goals of the Active Life Movement without shaming people who don&#8217;t look like Barbie, Superman, or Legos (?) and who like to eat food, watch TV, be on the computer, and sit down sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, then, instead of <em>promoting<\/em> the behaviors the organization likes, the advertisers resorted to reinforcing fat phobia\/hatred and the stereotype that fat people just sit around and eat.<\/p>\n<p>[I just realized I&#8217;m sitting in my bed, with a cat, having tossed off my shoes, I&#8217;m on my\u00a0computer&#8230; and I am eating a SNACK!!!!
