{"id":70529,"date":"2017-09-08T08:00:04","date_gmt":"2017-09-08T13:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=70529"},"modified":"2017-09-04T22:18:23","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T03:18:23","slug":"americans-at-work-not-a-pretty-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2017\/09\/08\/americans-at-work-not-a-pretty-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans At Work: Not A Pretty Picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Originally posted at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economicfront.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/21\/americans-at-work-not-a-pretty-picture\/\">Reports from the Economic Front.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is work like for Americans?\u00a0 The results of the Rand Corporation\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR2014.html\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>American Working Conditions Survey<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0(AWCS) paint a troubling picture.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">As the authors write in their summary:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The AWCS findings indicate that the American workplace is very physically and emotionally taxing, both for workers themselves and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The authors do note more positive findings.\u00a0 These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">that workers appear to have a certain degree of autonomy, most feel confident about their skill set, and many receive social support on the job.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite the importance of work to our emotional and physical well-being, social relations, and the development of our capacities to shape our world, little has been published about our experience of work. Here, then, is a more detailed look at some of the Survey\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_briefs\/RB9972.html\"><span class=\"s2\">findings<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Hazardous Workplace<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\">An overwhelming fraction of Americans engage in intense physical exertion on the job.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">In addition to physical demands, more than one-half of American workers (55 percent)\u00a0are exposed to unpleasant or potentially dangerous working conditions.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-70530 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/physical-work.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"971\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/physical-work.png 971w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/physical-work-500x134.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/physical-work-768x206.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pressures of Work<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Approximately two-thirds of Americans have jobs that involve working at very high speed\u00a0at least half the time; the same fraction works to tight deadlines at least half the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Long Work Day<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While presence at the work place during business hours is required for most Americans,\u00a0many take work home. About one-half of American workers do some work in their free time to\u00a0meet work demands. Approximately one in ten workers report working in their free\u00a0time \u201cnearly every day\u201d over the last month, two in ten workers report working in their free\u00a0time \u201conce or twice a week,\u201d and two in ten workers report working in their free time &#8220;once or twice a month.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-70531\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/work-hours.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"975\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/work-hours.png 975w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/work-hours-500x132.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/09\/work-hours-768x202.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Work Environment<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nearly one in five American workers were subjected to some form of verbal abuse,\u00a0unwanted sexual attention, threats, or humiliating behavior at work in the past month or to\u00a0physical violence, bullying or harassment, or sexual harassment at work in the past 12 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the same time, it is also true that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the workplace is a source of hostile social experiences for an important fraction of\u00a0American workers, it is a source of supportive social experiences for many others. More than one-half of American workers agreed with the statement \u201cI have very\u00a0good friends at work,\u201d with women more likely to report having very good friends at work\u00a0than men (61 and 53 percent, respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In sum, the survey\u2019s results make clear that work in the United States is physically and emotionally demanding and dangerous for many workers. And with the government\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/trump-is-dismantling-obamas-workplace-law-legacy\/article\/2625428\"><span class=\"s2\">weakening<\/span><\/a>\u00a0many of the labor and employment regulations designed to protect worker rights and safety, it is likely that workplace conditions will worsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Worker\u00a0organizing and workplace struggles for change need to be encouraged and supported. A recent Pew Research Center survey\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economicfront.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/07\/the-popularity-of-unions-is-growing-especially-among-younger-people\/\"><span class=\"s2\">showed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0growing support for unions, especially among younger workers. \u00a0It is not hard to understand\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economicfront.wordpress.com\/2017\/06\/17\/why-unions-matter\/\"><span class=\"s2\">why<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally posted at\u00a0Reports from the Economic Front.
