Recently, however, government efforts to reduce veteran homelessness\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/08\/04\/427419718\/the-u-s-declared-war-on-veteran-homelessness-and-it-actually-could-win\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #1155cc;\">have\u00a0had great success<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">. In response to a federal strategy known as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usich.gov\/opening-doors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #1155cc;\">Opening Doors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">,\u00a0since 2010 veteran homelessness has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudexchange.info\/resources\/documents\/2016-AHAR-Part-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #1155cc;\">declined by almost 50%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333;\">. And in that time period some cities, such as New Orleans, have reported veteran homelessness at functional zero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333; background: white;\">You would never know it from social media. As the world has grappled with the Syrian civil war,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=veteran+homelessness+memes&amp;rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS548US548&amp;espv=2&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj495GOoonTAhXjjVQKHf8nClsQ_AUIBigB&amp;biw=1242&amp;bih=602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #1155cc; background: white;\">political memes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333; background: white;\">\u00a0have emerged in the U.S. that make the case that we should prioritize homeless veterans over Syrian refugees.\u00a0These <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; background: white;\">memes<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/havokjournal.com\/nation\/refuse-geez-syrian-refugees-vs-homeless-veterans\/\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; background: white;\">foreground<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; background: white;\"> a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/slacktivist\/2015\/11\/20\/please-dont-suddenly-pretend-you-care-about-homeless-veterans-for-just-as-long-as-it-allows-you-to-oppose-helping-refugees-because-thats-hurting-both-veterans-and-refugees-and-its-making-you-mi\/\">competition<\/a> between homeless veterans and Syrian refugees<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; background: white;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'; color: #333333; background: white;\">in order to make\u00a0a misleading, emotionally-appealing argument against the resettlement of Syrian refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-70240\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/05\/1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"671\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/05\/1-1.png 1147w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/05\/1-1-500x205.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/05\/1-1-768x315.png 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2017\/05\/1-1-1024x420.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Deliberately or not, the online images are similar to propaganda. Actors create emotionally-charged illustrations with biased and one-sided evidence to encourage a political point. The memes push a narrative of homeless veterans as overlooked by the government, while this goes against the facts. They also\u00a0suggest\u00a0a fallacious argument that the Department of Veterans Affairs will lose funds because of the refugee resettlement program.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanrightsfirst.org\/blog\/veterans-talk-refugees-and-american-ideals-full-frontal-samantha-bee\">This is not the case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time the memes appeal to our sentiments.\u00a0Features writer for Mashable, Rebecca Ruiz, <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2017\/02\/02\/refugee-memes\/#_DlkDN8WmiqA\">contends<\/a> that memes like these pose the emotional question, \u201cIf people in the U.S. are suffering, why are we helping refugees?\u201d What if veterans are those slighted? This is a powerful idea because\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2013\/07\/11\/public-esteem-for-military-still-high\/\">Americans revere veterans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/10.1525\/sp.2013.12074?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\"><em>Coming Home: Attitudes toward U.S. Veterans Returning from Iraq<\/em><\/a>, sociologists Alair MacLean and Meredith Kleykamp argue that male veterans involved in recent military-related combat are still supported by the general public, even in light of the idea that\u00a0those exposed to combat have mental health issues and substance abuse problems. They add that veterans are privileged by symbolic capital, or prestige related to their service. A meme that presents veterans as treated unfairly is likely to produce an emotional reaction, something that is known to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2016\/09\/the-best-headspace-for-making-decisions\/500423\/\">simplify our thinking and decision-making<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the digital messages premised on helping veterans are compelling, they are false and a\u00a0strategic\u00a0exploitation of our feelings, one with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/antifascistnews.net\/2015\/12\/18\/alternative-internet-racism-alt-right-and-the-new-fascist-branding\/\">xenophobic, white nationalist, and anti-immigrant goals<\/a>. They urge us to advocate against Syrian resettlement to solve an unrelated problem that is already diminishing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ian Nahan has a Bachelor&#8217;s of Arts degree in both sociology and social work.
