It didn&#8217;t feel\u00a0like a time for business as usual. Sociology is not a partisan enterprise, but\u00a0sociologists understand themselves to be scientists\u00a0and we share\u00a0a body of literature from which we derive things we\u00a0believe to be more fact than fiction, at least until we have better data. Donald Trump&#8217;s candidacy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/lists\/people\/comparing-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-truth-o-met\/\">made a mockery of facts<\/a>, while his and Pence&#8217;s policy recommendations on everything from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/12\/08\/world\/does-torture-work-the-cias-claims-and-what-the-committee-found.html\">torture<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/evidence\/\">climate change<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/07\/17\/on-racial-profiling\/\">stop<\/a>-and-<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/10\/15\/nypds-stop-and-frisk-policy\/\">frisk<\/a> to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/the-anti-muslim-rhetoric-of-trump-and-cruz-only-helps-terrorists\/2016\/03\/24\/9440114c-f1ea-11e5-89c3-a647fcce95e0_story.html?utm_term=.102b672668eb\">excluding Muslims from the US<\/a> to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.ucdavis.edu\/rainbow\/html\/resolution97.html\">&#8220;reformability&#8221; of sexual minorities<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2016\/04\/18\/trumps-wall-would-mean-more-not-fewer-undocumented-immigrants-from-mexico\/\">The Wall<\/a> fly in the face of available data.<\/p>\n<p>I expressed my personal feelings about Trump&#8217;s election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lisawadephd\/posts\/1010739969049278\">here<\/a>, arguing that we need to shift our focus away from the voting patterns of our fellow Americans and toward the institutions that suppress, exclude, and differently weigh our votes. It&#8217;s a sociological argument, but also a partisan one, so I won&#8217;t reproduce it.\u00a0What I will do is go forward with Sociological Images, bringing it back to keep spreading the science of sociology, putting empirical research before presumptions as best as I can, as\u00a0I and so many guest posters\u00a0did <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/tag\/politics-election-2016\/\">during the campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>See you on Monday.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
