Cultural appropriation can become problematic when it is done without permission, serves to\u00a0benefit the dominant group, and erases or further marginalizes the oppressed group. In this way, cultural appropriation can recreate larger structures of inequality.<\/p>\n<p>On a recent stroll through a duty-free shop, I was introduced to one of these problematic examples in the form of a new Canadian product named <a href=\"http:\/\/totemdistillers.com\/\">&#8220;Totem Vodka<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0packaged in a bottle resembling a totem pole.\u00a0Totem Vodka is not a product of Indigenous entrepreneurship. Instead it is\u00a0a form of problematic cultural appropriation. Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Nations Erasure <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/brc\/art_architecture\/totem_poles.html\">Totem poles<\/a> are important symbolic creations of some First Nations families in Canada\u2019s Pacific Northwest.\u00a0They are symbols of family lineage that serve to document stories or histories of people, communities or clans. The Totem Vodka bottle and marketing images erases these families,\u00a0while appropriating their symbols.<\/p>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p>\nA stunning bottle for a stunning vodka <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TotemDistillers\">@TotemDistillers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NzrtiS5nkB\">pic.twitter.com\/NzrtiS5nkB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sam Hauck (@Sam_WineTeacher) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sam_WineTeacher\/status\/747978812948787200\">June 29, 2016<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nThe bottle stopper is shaped like a Thunderbird, a supernatural bird who causes thunder and lightning according to First Nations <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.slcc.ca\/node\/718\">mythology<\/a>. The Thunderbird crest is traditionally carved on the totem poles of people from the Thunderbird clan of the <a href=\"http:\/\/umista.ca\/kwakwakawakw\/index.php\">Kwakwaka&#8217;wakw nations<\/a> (on Vancouver Island). The origin of the Thunderbird (and totem poles) within Pacific Northwest First Nations communities is absent from the company\u2019s description of the bottle\u2019s design and construction. Instead, the bottle is superficially connected to a wide-array of global references; the bottle was \u201cdesigned on the West Coast of Canada, moulded by French glassmakers and topped with an Italian-made custom stopper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Significantly, the individuals featured in pictures on the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/totemdistillers\">Twitter account<\/a>\u00a0include few or no indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Nations Exploitation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The owner of Totem Distilleries is a <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/town-talk-pamela-anderson-takes-the-dive-from-baywatch-into-her-own-wine\">wealthy white entrepreneur<\/a> and proceeds from the vodka help support a <a href=\"http:\/\/wildliferescue.ca\/\">wildlife rescue association<\/a> without any First Nations connection.<\/p>\n<p>Settler societies have, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/ipinch\/outputs\/blog\/appropriation-month-first-nation-totem-poles\/\" target=\"_blank\">paradoxically<\/a>, both\u00a0outlawed the sacred work of totem pole carving\u00a0by indigenous peoples and\u00a0exploited it for their own profit. In this case, the\u00a0totem pole is used as an aesthetic tool to distinguish the vodka as authentically \u201cCanadian,&#8221; while reproducing an abstracted,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/aboriginal\/what-it-takes-for-aboriginal-people-to-make-the-news-1.2514466\" target=\"_blank\">exotified<\/a>, and ultimately false vision\u00a0of indigeneity.\u00a0First Nations people in Canada have rarely been either credited or compensated for the use of their cultural symbol.<\/p>\n<p>The example of Totem vodka fits within a larger pattern of racism and colonial exploitation of indigenous people. We can look to the historical effects of colonization in Canada to see how attempts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trc.ca\/websites\/trcinstitution\/File\/2015\/Honouring_the_Truth_Reconciling_for_the_Future_July_23_2015.pdf\">erase Indigenous culture<\/a>, while simultaneously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/first-nations-rights-confronting-colonialism-in-canada\/5321197\">exploiting it for the benefit of colonizers<\/a>, has led to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crrf-fcrr.ca\/en\/component\/flexicontent\/440-uncategorised-en\/24056-systemic-discrimination-against-aboriginal-peoples\">systemic discrimination<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellesleyinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Report-First-Peoples-Second-Class-Treatment-Feb-2015.pdf\">exclusionary policies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/publications\/reports\/shameful-neglect\">neglect<\/a> that continue into the present day.
