On his social media pages, he released a campaign poster featuring a young white woman with blonde hair and blue eyes\u00a0wearing\u00a0a gray tank top\u00a0decorated with American flag imagery. She is beautiful and young, exuding innocence. Atop the image the text reads &#8220;fight for Western civilization&#8221; and included David Duke&#8217;s website and logo. It\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/workthatmatters.blogspot.com\/2016\/07\/david-duke-from-kkk-to-intellectual.html\" target=\"_blank\">does not appear that she\u00a0consented<\/a> to being on the poster.<\/p>\n<p>When I came upon the image, I was immediately reminded of pro-Nazi\u00a0propaganda that I had seen in a museum in Germany, especially those depicting &#8220;Hitler youth.&#8221; Many of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=nazi+propaganda&amp;espv=2&amp;biw=1777&amp;bih=804&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiPq8XcwY3OAhUM4yYKHQDQAh0Q_AUIBigB&amp;dpr=0.9#tbm=isch&amp;q=nazi+propaganda+hitler+youth\" target=\"_blank\">posters<\/a> featured fresh white faces, looking healthy and clean, in stark contrast\u00a0to the distorted, darkened,\u00a0bloated, and snarling\u00a0faces of the targets of the\u00a0Nazi regime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/7-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69182\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-69182\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/7-1.png\" alt=\"7\" width=\"684\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/7-1.png 845w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/7-1-500x243.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/7-1-768x373.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/8.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69183\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-69183\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/8.png\" alt=\"8\" width=\"679\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/8.png 803w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/8-500x235.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/07\/8-768x362.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s different era, but the implied message of Duke&#8217;s poster is the same\u00a0&#8212; the nationalist message alongside the idealized figure &#8212;\u00a0so it wasn&#8217;t difficult to find a Nazi propaganda poster that drew the comparison. I tweeted it out like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-partner=\"tweetdeck\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">David Duke is running for senate. The campaign poster on the left is his. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DavidDuke?src=hash\">#DavidDuke<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AmericaFirst?src=hash\">#AmericaFirst<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/shudder?src=hash\">#shudder<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XjGPViDut0\">pic.twitter.com\/XjGPViDut0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lisa Wade, PhD (@lisawade) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lisawade\/status\/756722783124500481\">July 23, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Given that David Duke is an avowed racist running on a platform to save &#8220;Western&#8221; civilization, it didn&#8217;t seem like that much of a stretch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Provoking racist backlash.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0hashtagged it with\u00a0#davidduke and #americafirst, so\u00a0I\u00a0can&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t invite\u00a0it,\u00a0but the backlash was greater than any I have ever received. The day after the tweet, I easily got one tweet per minute, on average.<\/p>\n<p>What I found fascinating was the range of responses.\u00a0I was told I looked just like her &#8212; beautiful, blue-eyed, and white &#8212; was asked if I hated myself, accused of being a race traitor, and invited to join the movement against &#8220;white genocide.&#8221; I was also told that I was just jealous: comparatively hideous thanks to my age and weight. Trolls took shots at sociology, intellectuals, and my own intelligence. I was asked if I was Jewish, accused of being so, and\u00a0told to put my head in an oven. I was sent false\u00a0statistics about black crime. It&#8217;s not news that there are proud white supremacists and neo-nazis in America. It&#8217;s not news that women online get told they&#8217;re\u00a0ugly or fat\u00a0on the reg. It&#8217;s not news that I&#8217;m a (proud)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BINL0IYB1Kc\/?taken-by=lisawadephd\" target=\"_blank\">cat lady<\/a> either, for what it&#8217;s worth. But\u00a0I think transparency is our best bet to get people to acknowledge\u00a0the ongoing racism, antisemitism, sexism, and anti-intellectualism in our society.
