{"id":69040,"date":"2016-06-27T09:50:09","date_gmt":"2016-06-27T14:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=69040"},"modified":"2016-11-19T15:59:38","modified_gmt":"2016-11-19T20:59:38","slug":"sense-of-political-disenfranchisement-strongly-predicts-support-for-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2016\/06\/27\/sense-of-political-disenfranchisement-strongly-predicts-support-for-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"Sense of Political Disenfranchisement Strongly Predicts Support for Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One explanation for\u00a0Trump&#8217;s popularity on the political right\u00a0is\u00a0that supporters are attracted to him because they feel invisible to &#8220;establishment&#8221; candidates and Trump, as an &#8220;outsider&#8221; is going to &#8220;shake things up.&#8221;\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rand.org\/blog\/2016\/01\/rand-kicks-off-2016-presidential-election-panel-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> of\u00a03,037 Americans completed by RAND, weighted to match the US (citizen) population, suggests that there is something to this.<\/p>\n<p>About six months ago, RAND asked respondents if they agreed with the statement\u00a0\u201cpeople like me don&#8217;t have any say about what the government does.\u201d\u00a0Responses among likely Democratic voters didn&#8217;t significantly correlate with support for either Sanders or Clinton and those among likely Republican voters didn&#8217;t significantly correlate with support for Rubio or Cruz, but responses did correlate dramatically with a preference for Trump. All other things being equal, people who &#8220;somewhat&#8221; or &#8220;strongly&#8221; agreed with the statement were 86% more likely to prefer Trump over other candidates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/06\/7.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69041\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-69041\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/06\/7.png\" alt=\"7\" width=\"474\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/06\/7.png 609w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/06\/7-500x349.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This increased preference for Trump,&#8221; RAND explains, &#8220;is over and beyond any preferences based on respondent gender, age, race\/ethnicity, employment status, educational attainment, household income, attitudes towards Muslims, attitudes towards illegal immigrants, or attitudes towards Hispanics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else is driving Trump voters, a sense of disenfranchisement appears to be a powerful motivator.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
