{"id":68599,"date":"2016-03-01T13:27:34","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T18:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=68599"},"modified":"2016-03-10T18:20:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T23:20:25","slug":"lands-end-the-politics-of-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2016\/03\/01\/lands-end-the-politics-of-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Lands&#8217; End: The Politics of Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1970, the day after National Guard troops killed four unarmed protesters at Kent State University, students at Southern Illinois University went to the local McDonald\u2019s and demanded that the flag be lowered to half staff.\u00a0 The franchise owner complied.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald\u2019s got wind of this and told the franchise owner to raise the flag back up to full staff. When he conplied, the students threatened to burn the place down.<\/p>\n<p>The whipsawed franchise owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/obituaries\/fred-turner-savvy-operations-chief-who-helped-build-mcdonalds-empire-dies-at-80\/2013\/01\/08\/b3fee71a-59b3-11e2-9fa9-5fbdc9530eb9_story.html\">phoned<\/a> McDonald\u2019s CEO Fred Turner asking what to do. If Turner\u2019s response isn\u2019t part of the canon of management courses, it ought to be:\u00a0 \u201cThe next delivery truck that arrives, have him back in to the flag pole and knock it down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lands&#8217; End now finds itself in a similar position but with no flagpole and no trucks.<\/p>\n<p>You may have noticed that the most Lands&#8217; End catalogue looks different from the other 273 they\u2019ve sent you this year. Lots of people in a tableau rather than close ups of one model in merch. And palm trees. Palm trees? From Wisconsin? The paper too is less slick, with more of a matte finish. But what has landed Lands&#8217; End in hot water is the four-page interview with Gloria Steinem wearing Lands&#8217; End gear.\u00a0(The text in the upper right begins, \u201cIntroducing the Legend Series, our ode to individuals who have made a difference . . . .\u201d)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-FJoAjgtUvGk\/VtUEVWdzamI\/AAAAAAAAHi4\/_3plNOjvMgA\/s1600\/Lands%2BEnd.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-FJoAjgtUvGk\/VtUEVWdzamI\/AAAAAAAAHi4\/_3plNOjvMgA\/s400\/Lands%2BEnd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Lands&#8217; End is in trouble \u2013 profits and sales way down \u2013 and the new CEO wanted to change the look of the catalogue if not the clothes. But that was the beginning of more trouble. First, conservatives got word of it and started criticizing Lands&#8217; End for celebrating a woman who not only spoke out in favor of legalized abortion but who had actually had an abortion and said so.\u00a0Lands&#8217; End responded:\u00a0 \u201cIt was never our intention to raise a divisive political or religious issue, so when some of our customers saw the recent promotion that way, we heard them. We sincerely apologize for any offense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides apologizing, they also wiped the Gloria material from their website. (So far, they haven\u2019t yet asked me to return my catalogue, but who knows?)<\/p>\n<p>Then the pro-Gloria forces took to Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t intend to teach my children that anyone should do business with a company that is ashamed to even talk about feminism,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> says that Lands&#8217; End, in its attempt to retroactively duck the issue, is tacking away from the trend. Companies, says WaPo, have now become \u201cunapologetic in their stance on social issues.\u201d Big companies \u2013Target, Gap, Visa, Cheerios, etc. \u2013 have supported the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage or criticized Trump\u2019s denigration of Latinos. Sears and Wal-Mart came out against the Confederate flag.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>The message of these earlier moves seemed to be that the companies were willing to stake out a position they felt strongly about, even if it meant alienating some customers. Lands\u2019 End, it appears, may have a different mindset.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Is it Lands&#8217; End, or is it the issue? After the Charleston Church Massacre of June 2015, retreating from the Confederate flag became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsflow24.com\/change-59-of-americans-58-of-southerners-now-oppose-flying-the-confederate-flag-in-public-places-9t6j\" target=\"_blank\">the majority view even in the South<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/3.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68600\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68600\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/3.png\" alt=\"3\" width=\"500\" height=\"286\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-hhMxAjl6vC0\/VtUGDalD_lI\/AAAAAAAAHjE\/p7qHQOu0Vkg\/s1600\/Conf%2Bflag.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/183272\/record-high-americans-support-sex-marriage.aspx?utm_source=alert&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=heading&amp;utm_campaign=syndication\" target=\"_blank\">trend on gay marriage<\/a> has also made acceptance a safe bet:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/4.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68601\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68601\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/4.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"514\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/4.png 514w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/4-500x374.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\">But on abortion, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/183434\/americans-choose-pro-choice-first-time-seven-years.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">public is still split<\/a> and the issue is still salient:<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/5.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68602\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68602\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2016\/03\/5.png\" alt=\"5\" width=\"495\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\">Lands&#8217; End was caught between equally strong opinions. Their dilemma on Gloria reflects their dilemma on clothing and clientele.
