{"id":68318,"date":"2015-11-10T10:48:12","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T15:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=68318"},"modified":"2015-11-10T01:02:27","modified_gmt":"2015-11-10T06:02:27","slug":"protecting-white-women-in-the-bathroom-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2015\/11\/10\/protecting-white-women-in-the-bathroom-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting (white) women in the bathroom: A history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With interest, I have been watching the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbtqnation.com\/2015\/02\/kentucky-senate-panel-takes-another-vote-advances-transgender-bathroom-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">resistance<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/lgbt\/2015\/02\/26\/3627338\/texas-bill-make-felony-business-owners-not-discriminate-transgender-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">to\u00a0the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/02\/09\/florida-transgender-bathroom-law_n_6645910.html\" target=\"_blank\">right<\/a> of trans people to choose public restrooms based on their identity instead of\u00a0their biology at birth. Though there is no evidence that allowing trans people to use\u00a0the bathroom of their choice\u00a0will put anyone in danger, one of the arguments against doing so is that women or children will be victimized. Completely tone deaf to the actual experiences of trans people, the idea is nonetheless framed as allowing men to use women&#8217;s restrooms:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68321\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/12.jpg\" alt=\"12\" width=\"410\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t help but want to draw connections to history and a recent post at <a href=\"http:\/\/notchesblog.com\/2015\/11\/09\/stalling-civil-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\">Notches<\/a>, a history of sexuality blog, helped me do so.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that\u00a0it wasn&#8217;t so long ago that black and white people weren&#8217;t allowed to use the same restrooms in public.\u00a0When this practice came under attack, segregationists in the South, like anti-trans choice advocates today, claimed that it would be dangerous for white women, claiming\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0would\u00a0be infected with black women&#8217;s venereal diseases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/8.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-68319\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/8-500x227.jpg\" alt=\"8\" width=\"500\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/8-500x227.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/8.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>White\u00a0women participated in this resistance, protesting against the integration of their bathrooms. A girl at Central High in Little Rock, AR, for example, claimed that bathroom integration functionally stole bathroom facilities from white\u00a0girls.\u00a0\u201cMany of the girls won\u2019t use the rest rooms at Central,&#8221; she said, &#8220;simply because the \u2018Nigger\u2019 girls use them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several decades later, conservatives fighting the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) for women drew again on racism and the politics of the bathroom. They stoked fear in the American public by suggesting that passage of the ERA would lead to the sex integration of bathrooms. Still smarting from the loss of racial segregation, they even compared race and sex segregation, hoping that the public would be opposed to both.<\/p>\n<p>In this\u00a0anti-ERA flyer, the final threat is: &#8220;Do you want the sexes fully integrated like the races?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-68320\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/11-500x264.jpg\" alt=\"11\" width=\"500\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/11-500x264.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/11-1024x540.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/11\/11.jpg 1278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Combining the two was a powerful tool, exploiting\u00a0the longstanding racist\u00a0belief that white women were uniquely vulnerable to predatory, sexually voracious black men. Both race <em>and<\/em> sex integration of bathrooms would mean that white women would be going to the bathroom not just with\u00a0black women, but with black men.\u00a0&#8220;I ain&#8217;t going to have my wife be in the bathroom with some big, black, buck!&#8221; said one North Carolina legislator.<\/p>\n<p>This same argument, now with trans women as the target, is being made today.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
