However, researchers at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/implicit.harvard.edu\/implicit\/\">Harvard<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kirwaninstitute.osu.edu\/research\/understanding-implicit-bias\/\">Ohio State University<\/a>,\u00a0among others, have shown\u00a0that even whites who don&#8217;t endorse racist beliefs tend to be biased against non-whites. This bias, though, is <em>implicit:<\/em> it&#8217;s subconscious and activated in decisions we make that are faster than our conscious mind can control.<\/p>\n<p>You can test your own implicit biases\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/implicit.harvard.edu\/implicit\/\">here<\/a>. Millions of people have.<\/p>\n<p>But where do these negative subconscious attitudes come from? And when do they start?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kirwaninstitute.osu.edu\/\">Kirwan Institute<\/a>\u00a0for the study of race and ethnicity has found that we learn them early and often from the mass media. As an example, consider this\u00a0seemingly harmless digital billboard for Hiperos, a company that works to protect clients against risk online. The ad implies that, as a business, you need to be leery of working\u00a0with third parties. Of particular risk is exposure to bribery or corruption. Whom can you trust? Who are the people you should be afraid of? Who might be corrupt?<\/p>\n<p>I took a photo of each of the ads\u00a0as they cycled through. Turns out, the company portrays\u00a0people you should be worried about as\u00a0mostly non-white or not-quite-white.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/10\/3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-68168\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/10\/3-500x294.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"500\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/10\/3-500x294.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/10\/3-1024x601.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/10\/3.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who is untrustworthy?
