{"id":6815,"date":"2009-02-16T02:38:08","date_gmt":"2009-02-16T07:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=6815"},"modified":"2017-10-01T22:31:23","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T03:31:23","slug":"my-cat-persondog-person-rant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/16\/my-cat-persondog-person-rant\/","title":{"rendered":"My Cat Person\/Dog Person Rant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do we really mean when we ask someone if they&#8217;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonstock.com\/directory\/d\/dog_person.asp\">dog person or a cat person<\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0Wait&#8230; think hard&#8230; what are you <em>really<\/em> asking?<\/p>\n<p>I think we&#8217;re asking\u00a0if a person is more masculine or feminine.\u00a0 After all, don&#8217;t we stereotype women as cat people and men as dog people?\u00a0 And don&#8217;t we think men with cats are a little femmy or, at minimum, sweeter than most&#8230; even, maybe, gay?\u00a0 And don&#8217;t we imagine that chicks with dogs are a little less girly than most, a little more rough and tumble?\u00a0\u00a0The cat person\/dog person dichotomy is gendered.<\/p>\n<p>This might explain why we continue to insist that dogs and cats are <a href=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/736x\/4a\/0e\/ab\/4a0eaba4dd55acbe8ed385dc11809e8a--far-side-cartoons-far-side-comics.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">natural enemies<\/a>.\u00a0We tend to insist that dogs and cats don&#8217;t get along in the face of millions of households in which they get along just fine.\u00a0 These are Gwen&#8217;s pets (clockwise Shadow Cat, Rocky, and Corky):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6843\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/september-1024x560.jpg\" alt=\"september\" width=\"510\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They are clearly at each other&#8217;s throats constantly.<\/p>\n<p>And, have you ever noticed that being a dog person is sort of cooler?\u00a0 Like, it&#8217;s cool to be a dog person, but less cool to be a cat person?\u00a0 I mean, no one ever fears ending up a &#8220;crazy dog lady,&#8221; and it&#8217;s not just because of the lack of alliteration.\u00a0 You see because gender is hierarchical, so is the dog person\/cat person dichotomy.\u00a0I hate being asked if I&#8217;m a dog or cat person.\u00a0 I have two cats, but I love dogs equally, and that doesn&#8217;t make me less cool than Gwen.\u00a0 (We&#8217;re obviously equally cool.)<\/p>\n<p>Also!<\/p>\n<p>Cats aren&#8217;t all alike.\u00a0 Neither are dogs. \u00a0So you <em>can&#8217;t<\/em> be a dog person or a cat person.\u00a0 It&#8217;s nonsensical.<\/p>\n<p>And another thing!<\/p>\n<p>If you want to get all stereotypical about it, I&#8217;ll just say that (1) if dogs are dependent, passive, and happily subordinated to their owners, while cats are independent but offer nice companionship, and (2) women are &#8220;cat people&#8221; and men are &#8220;dog people,&#8221; then (3) men are really oppressive bastards who can&#8217;t stand a relationship with an equal and women are inherently democratic and don&#8217;t desire power (none of which I believe).\u00a0 So let&#8217;s not go there, okay?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
