{"id":67163,"date":"2015-07-02T08:42:26","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T13:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=67163"},"modified":"2015-09-01T21:12:35","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T02:12:35","slug":"nearly-half-of-black-and-latina-stem-workers-mistaken-for-janitors-and-assistants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2015\/07\/02\/nearly-half-of-black-and-latina-stem-workers-mistaken-for-janitors-and-assistants\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly Half of Black and Latina Scientists Mistaken for Janitors or Assistants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey of 557\u00a0female scientists\u00a0found widespread experiences of discrimination and alienation in the workforce that varied in interesting ways by race.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/71.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-67164\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/71-500x269.png\" alt=\"7\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/71-500x269.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/71-280x150.png 280w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/71.png 708w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While all types of women reported\u00a0experiencing these forms of discrimination in large numbers &#8212; and 100% of a sub-sample of 60 interviewed for the study reported at least one &#8212; the race differences are interesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black women were especially likely to need to prove and re-prove competence.<\/li>\n<li>Asian and white women, especially, received pressure to withdraw from the workplace after having children.<\/li>\n<li>Asian women were most likely to be pushed to perform a stereotypically feminine role in the office, followed by white and then Latina women. Black women rarely reported this.<\/li>\n<li>Latina and white women were most likely to feel supported by other women in the workforce; Black women the least.<\/li>\n<li>And almost half of Black and Latina women\u00a0had been mistaken for janitors or administrative assistants, compared to a third of white women and a quarter of Asian women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study, by law professor Joan Williams and two colleagues, can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchastings.edu\/news\/articles\/2015\/01\/double-jeopardy-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
