{"id":67077,"date":"2015-06-06T09:05:24","date_gmt":"2015-06-06T14:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=67077"},"modified":"2015-09-01T21:38:35","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T02:38:35","slug":"majority-of-republicans-now-agree-that-being-gay-is-morally-acceptable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2015\/06\/06\/majority-of-republicans-now-agree-that-being-gay-is-morally-acceptable\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of Republicans Now Agree that Being Gay is Morally Acceptable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0Gallup <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/183332\/majority-say-gays-lesbians-born-not-made.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a> of a random sample of Americans conducted in May finds that, for the first time, a\u00a0<em>majority<\/em> of Republicans report that they believe that gay and lesbian relations\u00a0are &#8220;morally acceptable.&#8221; This is your image of the week:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/12.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-67078\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/12-500x320.jpg\" alt=\"12\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And this, showing that a plurality of Republicans &#8212; meaning more than not &#8212; think sexual orientation is inborn, not chosen or learned:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/13.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-67079\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/06\/13-500x364.jpg\" alt=\"13\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, to be fair, Gallup specifies a sampling error of \u00b14 percentage points. So, they&#8217;re 95% confident that at least 47% of Republicans now approve of gayness, but also as many as 55%. Also, I don&#8217;t know what &#8220;gay and lesbian relations&#8221; means &#8212; sexual relations? relationships? &#8212; and neither do the pollsters or the respondents, as far as I know, which is some interesting slippery question asking. Still, that&#8217;s the data.\u00a0Here&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2015\/05\/20\/gallup-majority-of-republicans-now-view-gay-and-lesbian-relations-as-morally-acceptable\/\" target=\"_blank\">skepticism<\/a>, just in case you&#8217;ve got an eyebrow raised.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
