{"id":66566,"date":"2015-04-20T09:34:06","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T14:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=66566"},"modified":"2015-09-01T21:13:38","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T02:13:38","slug":"is-gay-black-and-male-a-high-salary-trifecta-findings-from-a-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2015\/04\/20\/is-gay-black-and-male-a-high-salary-trifecta-findings-from-a-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Gay, Black, and Male as a High Salary Trifecta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sociologists are quite familiar with the combination of marginalized identities that can lead to oppression, inequalities, and \u201cdouble disadvantages.\u201d But can negative stereotypes actually have <em>positive<\/em> consequences?<\/p>\n<p><em>Financial Juneteenth<\/em> recently <a href=\"http:\/\/financialjuneteenth.com\/study-gay-black-men-more-likely-to-earn-a-higher-salary-than-straight-black-men\/\" target=\"_blank\">highlighted<\/a> a <a href=\"http:\/\/spq.sagepub.com\/content\/77\/1\/75.full.pdf+html\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> showing that gay black men may have better odds of landing a job and higher salaries than their straight, black, male colleagues. Led by sociologist <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/pedullad\/davidpedulla\">David Pedulla<\/a>, the data comes from\u00a0resumes and a job description evaluated by 231 white individuals selected in\u00a0a national probability sample. The experiment asked\u00a0them to suggest starting salaries for the position and answer questions about the fictional prospective employee. To suggest race and sexual orientation, resumes included typically raced names (either \u201cBrad Miller\u201d and \u201cDarnell Jackson\u201d) and listed participation in \u201cGay Student Advisory Council\u201d half the time.<\/p>\n<p>Pedulla found that straight Black men were more likely to be perceived as threatening, measured with answers as to whether the respondent thought the applicant was\u00a0likely to &#8220;break workplace rules,&#8221; make &#8220;female co-workers feel uncomfortable,\u2019\u2019 or &#8220;steal from the workplace.&#8221; In contrast, gay Black men were considered by far the least threatening. Gay black men were also judged to be the most feminine, followed by gay white men.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most surprisingly, the combination of being gay, Black, and male attracted the highest salaries. Gay Black men were considered the most valuable employee overall. Straight white men were offered slightly lower salaries and\u00a0gay white men and straight black men were offered lowered salaries still.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/333.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-66567\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/333.png\" alt=\"333\" width=\"572\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/333.png 674w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/333-500x210.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pedulla\u2019s findings have sparked a conversation among scholars and journalists about the complexity of stereotypes surrounding black masculinities and sexualities.
