Health food stores and upscale grocery chains have aisles dedicated to varieties of quinoa, packaged under many different brand labels, touting it to be a nutritional goldmine. A simple Google search of the word returns pages of results with buzzwords like \u201chealthiest,\u201d \u201corganic,\u201d and \u201cwholesome.\u201d Vegan and health-enthusiast subcultures swear by this expensive food product, and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) even declared the year 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/quinoa-2013\/en\/\">International Year of the Quinoa<\/a>,\u00a0owing to the grain\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n<p>The journey of the grain &#8212; as it makes it to the gourmet kitchen at upscale restaurants in countries like the United States\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0however, is often overlooked in mainstream discourse. It\u00a0often begins in the Yellow Andes region of Bolivia, where the farmers that grow this crop have depended on it as almost a sole nutritional source for decades, if not centuries. The boom in western markets, with exceedingly high demands for this crop has caused it to transition from a traditional food crop to a <a href=\"http:\/\/mskropac.yolasite.com\/resources\/Quinoa%20boom%20offers%20hard%20lesson%20in%20food%20economics%20-%20Business%20-%20CBC%20News.pdf\">major cash crop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While critical global organizations like the FAO have been portraying this as positive, they tend to discount\u00a0the\u00a0challenge of participating in a demanding global market.\u00a0Within-country inequality, skewed export\/import dynamics, and capitalist trade practices that remain in the favor of the powerful player in these dynamics \u2013 the core consumer \u2013 cause new and difficult problems for Bolivian farmers, like not being able to afford to buy the food they have traditionally depended upon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/23.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-66533\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/23-500x98.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"500\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/23-500x98.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/23.png 957w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/32.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-66534\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/32-500x88.png\" alt=\"3\" width=\"500\" height=\"88\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/32-500x88.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/32-1024x180.png 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/32.png 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0growing such large amounts of quinoa has been degrading\u00a0the Andean soil: even the FAO outlines\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/family-farming-2014\/news\/news\/details-press-room\/en\/c\/223319\/\">concerns for biodiversity<\/a>, while otherwise touting the phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/72.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-66535\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/72-500x175.png\" alt=\"7\" width=\"500\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/72-500x175.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/72-1024x358.png 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/04\/72.png 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairtrade.net\/single-view+M508dd767606.html\" target=\"_blank\">efforts<\/a> have been put in place by farmer unions, cooperatives and development initiatives\u00a0to mitigate some negative effects on the primary producers of quinoa, they have not been enough to protect the food security of these Andean farmers.
