And taking econ classes also makes people\u00a0more anti-social than they were before. It turns out, there&#8217;s quite a bit of research on this, nicely summarized <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/socf.12153\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Econ majors are less likely to share, less generous to the needy, and more likely to cheat, lie, and steal.<\/p>\n<p>In one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0167268111000746\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, for example, economists Yoram Bauman and Elaina Rose noted the consistent finding that econ majors were less generous\u00a0and\u00a0asked whether the effect was do to selection (people who are anti-social choose to take econ classes) or indoctrination (taking econ classes makes one more anti-social).\u00a0They found that both play a role.<\/p>\n<p>Students at their institution &#8212; University of Washington &#8212; were asked at registration each semester if they&#8217;d like to donate to WashPIRG (a left-leaning public interest group) and ATN (a non-partisan group that lobbies to reduce tuition rates). \u00a0Bauman and Elaina crunched the data along with students&#8217;\u00a0chosen majors and classes. They found that econ majors were less likely to donate to either cause (the selection hypothesis) and that non-econ majors who had taken econ classes were less likely to donate than non-majors who hadn&#8217;t (the indoctrination hypothesis).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/03\/1c1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66337\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/03\/1c1.jpg\" alt=\"1c\" width=\"389\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/03\/21.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-66338\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2015\/03\/21.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"393\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What should we make of these findings?<\/p>\n<p>Sociologist Amitai Etzioni\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/socf.12153\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\">takes a stab<\/a> at an answer. He argues that neoclassical economics isn&#8217;t a problem in itself. Instead, the problem may be that there are no &#8220;balancing&#8221; classes, ones that present a different kind\u00a0of economics. In other part of the academy, he argues\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0specifying\u00a0<span class=\"current-selection\">social<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">philos<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">ophy,<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">political<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">science,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">and<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">sociology&#8211; there is &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">a<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">great<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">variety<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">of<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">app<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">roaches\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">are<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">advanced,<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">thereb<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">y<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">leaving<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">studen<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">ts<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">with<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">a<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">consolidated<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">debasing<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">exposure<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"current-selection\">a<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">cacophony<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">of<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">con\ufb02icting<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">pro-social<\/span> <span class=\"current-selection\">views.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Being exposed to a variety of views, including ones that question the premises of neoclassical economics, may be one way to make economists more honest and kind.
