The reason: Obamacare\u2019s \u201cgravitational pull toward a single-payer system that would essentially supplant private insurance with a government program.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gillespie, who lays out his credentials at the start of the article \u2013 he ran for Senate in Virginia and lost \u2013 notes that Obamacare is unpopular. But he omits all mention of a government-run single-payer system that happens to be very popular \u2013 Medicare. No Republican dare run on a platform of doing away with it. Gillespie himself accused Obamacare of cutting Medicare, a statement that Politifact found \u201cMostly False.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-6xw-io8I8Sk\/VHD_rQigobI\/AAAAAAAAGvk\/CH9hLo9TSkE\/s1600\/Gillespie%2BPolitifact.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-6xw-io8I8Sk\/VHD_rQigobI\/AAAAAAAAGvk\/CH9hLo9TSkE\/s1600\/Gillespie%2BPolitifact.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"101\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So how are seniors doing? Compared to their pre-Medicare counterparts, they are\u00a0 probably healthier, and they\u2019re probably shelling out less for health care. But compared to seniors in other countries, not so well. A\u00a0<\/span>Commonwealth Fund<a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/in-the-literature\/2014\/nov\/International-Survey-of-Older-Adults\"> survey<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0of eleven countries finds that seniors (age 65 and older) in the U.S. are the least healthy \u2013 the most likely to suffer from chronic illnesses.*\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-X5e9oiBBaE8\/VHEBqXZRJUI\/AAAAAAAAGvw\/5jdViqUzdtA\/s1600\/Med%2B1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-X5e9oiBBaE8\/VHEBqXZRJUI\/AAAAAAAAGvw\/5jdViqUzdtA\/s1600\/Med%2B1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Over half the U.S. seniors say that they are taking four or more prescription drugs; all the other countries were below 50%:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-y5aWzWSa8Ts\/VHEBwSaG78I\/AAAAAAAAGv4\/jUY-A3CInDo\/s1600\/Med%2B2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-y5aWzWSa8Ts\/VHEBwSaG78I\/AAAAAAAAGv4\/jUY-A3CInDo\/s1600\/Med%2B2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"328\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And despite Medicare, money was a problem. Nearly one in five said that in the past year they \u201cdid not visit a doctor, skipped a medical test or treatment that a doctor recommended, or did not fill a prescription or skipped doses because of cost.\u201d A slightly higher percent had been hit with $2,000 or more in out-of-pocket expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/--ijF8w1Y0os\/VHEB2041LxI\/AAAAAAAAGwE\/l3PsgUsllEw\/s1600\/Med%2B3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/--ijF8w1Y0os\/VHEB2041LxI\/AAAAAAAAGwE\/l3PsgUsllEw\/s1600\/Med%2B3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"317\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In those other countries, with their more socialistic health care systems, seniors seem to be doing better, physically and financially.\u00a0 One reason that American seniors are less healthy is that our universal, socialized medical care doesn\u2019t kick in until age 65. People in those other countries have affordable health care starting in the womb.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Critics of more socialized systems claim that patients must wait longer to see a doctor. The survey found some support for that. Does it take more than four weeks to get to see a specialist? U.S. seniors had the highest percentage of those who waited less than that. But when it came to getting an ordinary doctor\u2019s appointment, the U.S. lagged behind seven of the other ten countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-BkpVFvJp1I0\/VHEEylkXwJI\/AAAAAAAAGwU\/EPAETsh7cPM\/s1600\/Med%2B5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-BkpVFvJp1I0\/VHEEylkXwJI\/AAAAAAAAGwU\/EPAETsh7cPM\/s1600\/Med%2B5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"291\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was one bright spot for U.S. seniors. They were the most likely to have developed a treatment plan that they could carry out in daily life. And their doctors\u00a0 \u201cdiscussed their main goals and gave instructions on symptoms to watch for\u201d and talked with them about diet and exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #747474;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-WE7RfzFUF2k\/VHECJ7WEyGI\/AAAAAAAAGwI\/Zf112ntv5Eg\/s1600\/Med%2B4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-WE7RfzFUF2k\/VHECJ7WEyGI\/AAAAAAAAGwI\/Zf112ntv5Eg\/s1600\/Med%2B4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #000000;\">Gillespie and many other Republicans want to scrap Obamacare and substitute something else. That\u2019s progress I suppose. Not too long ago, they were quite happy with the pre-Obamacare status quo. Throughout his years in the White House, George Bush insisted that \u201cAmerica has the best health care system in the world.\u201d Their Republican ideology precludes them from learning from other countries.
