The introduction reads (typos included):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Appreciating Gender Differences: Often there are many stereotypes attached to being male or female. Yet male and female together keep our species alive! Through knowing and appreciating the many differences in brain development and psychological processes of males vs. female one learn to accept and appreciate the differences.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then there\u2019s this graphic: <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/1-3-Copy4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-65130\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/1-3-Copy4-500x399.jpg\" alt=\"1 (3) - Copy\" width=\"500\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/1-3-Copy4-500x399.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/1-3-Copy4.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a> Yes, boys and girls in the class all got the same handout, with the normal\u00a0human\u00a0described as \u201cyou\u201d and the one in the dress labeled \u201cshe.\u201d After the graphic is a list of questions for the students to ponder in an essay, such as, \u201cHow might knowing these differences influence and impact an intimate relationship you might currently have or develop in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her defense, the teacher naturally told the\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Dispatch<\/em>\u00a0that the point was to just \u201cstimulate conversation.\u201d But nothing in the assignment suggests the stereotypes might not be anything but\u00a0true. None of the essay questions cast doubt on the facts presented. Consider revising the\u00a0text like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Appreciating Gender\u00a0Similarities: Often there are many stereotypes attached to being male or female. Yet male and female together keep our species alive! Through knowing and appreciating the many\u00a0similarities\u00a0in brain development and psychological processes of males vs. female one learn to accept and appreciate the\u00a0similarities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That could be a useful opening to a unit on gender and development for\u00a0high school sex education (without the graphic). Where did this come from? The teacher said it came from \u201can outdated book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the power of Google image search, you can follow this image around the Internet, where it has been used by a lot of people to illustrate supposedly funny-but-oh-so-true stereotypes, like \u201cHilarious differences between men and women,\u201d and on\u00a0pages\u00a0with sexist aphorisms such as, \u201cA woman worries about the future until she gets a husband; a man never worries about the future until he gets a wife,\u201d and on\u00a0relationship advice pages, with conclusions such as, \u201cIf we understand this basic fundamental, there will be better relationships \u2026 steadier !!,\u201d and even \u201cReal, Honest Female Advice\u201d for\u00a0men who want to \u201cstart having unbelievable success with women.\u201d It always has\u00a0the same typo (\u201cFigure Our Her Needs\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t find an original use, or any serious attempt at educational use, but I\u2019d love to know who came up with it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; color: #444444;\">Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/books-and-culture\/in-ohio-classroom-men-think-and-women-feel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pacific Standard<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; color: #444444;\">Philip N.
