But did you know that the reason we infused such a beverage with the drug in the first place was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/video.pbs.org\/video\/2121163348\/\" target=\"_blank\">because of prohibition<\/a>? Cocaine cola replaced cocaine\u00a0<em>wine.<\/em>\u00a0In fact, when it was debuted in\u00a01886, it was described as\u00a0&#8220;Coca-Cola: The\u00a0Temperance\u00a0Drink.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first mass marketed cocaine product was Vin Mariani, a cocaine-infused Bordeaux introduced in the 1860s. Legal and requiring no prescription, it was believed to &#8220;restore health and vitality&#8221; and I&#8217;m sure it felt like it did. Wikipedia <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vin_Mariani\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> that it included\u00a0<span style=\"color: #252525;\">7.2\u00a0mg of cocaine per ounce; comparatively, a\u00a0line snorted is about 25 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/33.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-64946\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/33-500x721.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"367\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/33-500x721.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/33.jpg 501w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/43.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-64947\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/43.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"368\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes, Vin Mariani was good for men, women, and children. The &#8220;tonic of kings!&#8221; Even the Pope! He loved it so much he called it a \u201cbenefactor of humanity\u201d and gave it a Vatican\u00a0Gold Medal:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/24.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64940\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/11\/24.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"320\" height=\"442\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But he was just the most eminent of its fans. Mariani&#8217;s media blitz included <a href=\"http:\/\/thenonist.com\/index.php\/thenonist\/permalink\/vin_mariani\/\" target=\"_blank\">endorsements<\/a> from Sarah Bernhardt, H.G. Wells, Ulysses S. Grant, Queen Victoria, the Empress of Russia, Thomas Edison, and the then-President of the United States, William McKinley.\u00a0Jules Verne reportedly <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=9ceLzaeHsZAC&amp;pg=PA61&amp;lpg=PA61&amp;dq=how+much+cocaine+in+vin+mariani&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=VLLesFez4k&amp;sig=vuFuPJU2-51Q6kNENd_oeH0LSlE&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=J6ddVOeVDJW5ogTp0oDoBA&amp;ved=0CE4Q6AEwCA#v=onepage&amp;q=edison&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">joked<\/a>: &#8220;Since a single bottle of Mariani&#8217;s extraordinary coca wine guarantees a lifetime of 100 years, I shall be obliged to live until the year 2700!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vin Mariani\u00a0dominated the market, but there was an American chemist, John Smith Pemberton, who made a competing product:\u00a0Pemberton&#8217;s French Wine Coca. He\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cocaine.org.uk\/coca-cola\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a>\u00a0it as an &#8220;intellectual beverage.&#8221; Pemberton was located in &#8212; you guessed it, Atlanta &#8212; and the state enacted temperance legislation in 1885.
