{"id":6453,"date":"2014-02-12T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2014-02-12T14:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=6453"},"modified":"2014-06-09T01:10:59","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T06:10:59","slug":"the-feminization-of-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/02\/12\/the-feminization-of-love\/","title":{"rendered":"The Feminization of Love and Masculinization of Sex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What comes to mind when you think of romance, love, and Valentine&#8217;s Day?\u00a0 Probably things like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Write-a-Love-Poem\" target=\"_blank\">sunsets<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/tips.webdesign10.com\/flowers.html\" target=\"_blank\">flowers<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stcroixchocolateco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">chocolates<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.candles.net\/p\/pure-candles-pillars.html\" target=\"_blank\">candles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Write-a-Love-Poem\" target=\"_blank\">poetry<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/55056492@N00\/417930509\" target=\"_blank\">bubble baths<\/a>. \u00a0You know, <em>girl<\/em> stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/41.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-61371\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/41-500x245.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"500\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/41-500x245.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/41-1024x502.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/41.jpg 1114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Francesca Cancian, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/01\/steak-and-a-blow-job-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">who writes on love<\/a>,\u00a0calls this the<em> feminization of love<\/em>.\u00a0 It makes love seem like its for women and girls only. \u00a0This is a problem for at least two reasons. \u00a0First, because men are supposed to avoid girly things in our culture, they are pressured to pretend like they&#8217;re not into love and love-related things. \u00a0That&#8217;s why men are offered the alternative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/01\/steak-and-a-blow-job-day\/\" target=\"_self\">Steak and a Blow Job Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Second, it makes other ways of expressing love less visible. \u00a0Maybe he shows love by always changing the oil in the car or making sure the computer is updated with anti-virus software. \u00a0These can be mis-recognized as not about love because they aren&#8217;t the proper socially constructed symbols. \u00a0So, if he doesn&#8217;t also show up with flowers or candy once in a while, maybe she doesn&#8217;t <em>feel<\/em> loved.<\/p>\n<p>The flip side of this is the masculinization of sex. \u00a0The rather new idea that what men are really interested in is sex and that this is secondary or, even, obligatory for women.<\/p>\n<p>The feminization of love and masculinization of sex manifests itself in a myriad of ways across our culture, causing all sorts of problems. \u00a0In the case of Valentine&#8217;s Day, it makes it seem as if the (assumed heterosexual) holiday is for women but, if he does it right, he&#8217;ll get sex as a reward. \u00a0How romantic.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/books-and-culture\/feminization-love-masculinization-sex-74746\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
