Politicians and\u00a0legislatures have been increasingly tipping toward marriage equality. Lots of us are commending the powerful and high-profile individuals who have decided to support the cause.<\/p>\n<p>But, let&#8217;s not be\u00a0too grateful.<\/p>\n<p>A figure at <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/1431\/\" target=\"_blank\">xkcd<\/a> puts this in perspective. It traces four pieces of data over\u00a0time: popular approval and legalization of both interracial marriage and same-sex marriage. It shows that the state-by-state legalization of same-sex marriage is <em>following<\/em> public opinion, whereas the legalization of interracial marriage <em>led<\/em> public opinion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/10\/24.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-64409\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/10\/24-500x292.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"500\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/10\/24-500x292.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/10\/24.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason that we look back at Civil Rights legislation and see leadership. Politicians, litigators, and activists were pushing for rights that the public wasn&#8217;t necessarily ready to extend.\u00a0In comparison, today&#8217;s power brokers appear to be following public opinion, changing their mind because the wind is suddenly blowing a new way.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure there are politicians out there taking risks at the local level.
