{"id":63959,"date":"2014-09-03T09:00:21","date_gmt":"2014-09-03T14:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=63959"},"modified":"2014-09-25T01:57:54","modified_gmt":"2014-09-25T06:57:54","slug":"the-average-white-americans-social-network-is-1-black","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/09\/03\/the-average-white-americans-social-network-is-1-black\/","title":{"rendered":"The Average White American&#8217;s Social Network is 1% Black"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American divisions over the state of our country&#8217;s race relations were brought to the forefront in the aftermath of Mike Brown&#8217;s shooting by a Ferguson, MO police officer named Darren Wilson.\u00a0Black Americans are more than twice as likely as whites or Hispanics to say that the killing was part of a broader pattern (<a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/news\/2014\/08\/18\/ferguson-mo\/\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>). \u00a0And blacks are twice as likely as whites to say that race played an important role in Wilson&#8217;s decision to\u00a0shoot (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/08\/18\/stark-racial-divisions-in-reactions-to-ferguson-police-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\">source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, Robert Jones <a href=\"theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2014\/08\/self-segregation-why-its-hard-for-whites-to-understand-ferguson\/378928\/\" target=\"_blank\">argues<\/a> that these disparate opinions may be caused, in part, by the different life experiences of the typical\u00a0white and black\u00a0American.\u00a0He shows data, from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/publicreligion.org\/research\/2013\/10\/2013-american-values-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Values Survey<\/a><span style=\"color: #242b30;\">, indicating that black people are much more likely than whites to report living in communities rife with problems, from a lack of jobs\u00a0and\u00a0inadequate school funding\u00a0to\u00a0crime and racial tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, whites may be genuinely naive about what it&#8217;s like to be black in America because many of them don&#8217;t know any black people. \u00a0According to the survey, the average white American&#8217;s social network is only 1% black. \u00a0<strong>Three-quarters of white Americans haven&#8217;t had a meaningful conversation with a single non-white person in the last six months.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/08\/24.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-63960\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/08\/24-500x253.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"500\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/08\/24-500x253.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/08\/24.jpg 554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the social network of the average black American is 65% black and, among Hispanic Americans, 46% Hispanic.<\/p>\n<p>The average white person&#8217;s\u00a0failure to engage meaningfully with people of color isn&#8217;t solely a matter of personal choice, though that is certainly part of it. \u00a0Nor is it simply a function of the country being\u00a0majority white, non-Hispanic (but not for long). \u00a0White insularity is caused, too,\u00a0by occupational and residential segregation which, in turn, is the result of both individual choices and institutionalized mechanisms that keep black people in poverty and prison.<\/p>\n<p>If we want the people of America to\u00a0embrace justice, we must make our institutions just.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/health-and-behavior\/average-white-americans-social-network-just-one-percent-black-90279\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
