{"id":63883,"date":"2014-12-29T15:00:29","date_gmt":"2014-12-29T20:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=63883"},"modified":"2017-07-09T00:32:54","modified_gmt":"2017-07-09T05:32:54","slug":"in-employers-eyes-for-profit-colleges-are-equivalent-to-high-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/12\/29\/in-employers-eyes-for-profit-colleges-are-equivalent-to-high-school\/","title":{"rendered":"In Employers&#8217; Eyes, For-Profit Colleges are Equivalent to High School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/29.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-65517\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/29-500x111.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"500\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/29-500x111.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/29-1024x229.png 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/29.png 1475w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Holding a\u00a0college degree, it is widely assumed, improves the likelihood that a person will be successful in the labor market. \u00a0This maxim draws individuals into college across the class spectrum and aspiring\u00a0students who are\u00a0low-income or non-white\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/tressie-mcmillan-cottom\/for-profit-colleges-kaplan-university_b_1205464.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may find themselves<\/a>\u00a0enrolled at a for-profit college.<\/p>\n<p>For profit colleges have been getting slammed for their high prices, low bars, and atrocious graduation rates. \u00a0Now we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caldercenter.org\/sites\/default\/files\/WP-%20116.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another reason<\/a> to worry that these institutions are doing more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>Economist Rajeev Darolia and his colleagues sent out 8,914 fictitious resumes and waited to see if they received a response. \u00a0They were interested in whether\u00a0attending a for-profit college actually enhanced job opportunities, as ads for such schools claim, so they varied the level of education on the resumes and whether the applicant attended a for-profit or community college.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70402\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70402\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70402 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/12\/2-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Ryan McNight flickr creative commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It turns out that employers evaluate applicants who attended two-year community colleges and those who attended for-profit colleges about equally. \u00a0Community colleges, in\u00a0other words, open just as many doors to possibility as for-profit ones.<\/p>\n<p>Darolia and his colleagues then tested whether employers displayed a preference for applicants who went to for-profit colleges versus\u00a0applicants with no college at all. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t.
