{"id":63314,"date":"2014-07-19T09:00:06","date_gmt":"2014-07-19T14:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=63314"},"modified":"2014-07-18T15:46:49","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T20:46:49","slug":"saturday-stat-wait-who-dislikes-atheists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/07\/19\/saturday-stat-wait-who-dislikes-atheists\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Stat: Wait, WHO Dislikes Atheists?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month I posted <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/06\/14\/saturday-stat-atheists-still-rank-as-most-disliked\/\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a> showing that, of all the things that might disqualify someone for public office, being an atheist is tops. \u00a0I wrote: &#8220;<span style=\"color: #444444;\">Prejudice against those who say there\u2019s no god is stronger than ageism, homophobia, and sexism.&#8221; On average, Americans would rather vote for someone who admitted to smoking pot\u00a0or\u00a0had an extramarital affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We just don&#8217;t like atheists.<\/p>\n<p>But who is &#8220;we&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>A survey by\u00a0the Pew Research Center asked Americans of varying religious affiliations how they felt about each other. \u00a0atheists were most disliked by Protestants, especially White evangelicals and Black Protestants (somewhat less so\u00a0White Mainline Protestants). \u00a0Atheists quite liked themselves, and agnostics thought\u00a0were they were okay. Among other religiously affiliated groups, Jews\u00a0gave atheists the highest rating.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/07\/15.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-63315\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/07\/15-500x400.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/07\/15-500x400.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/07\/15.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, atheists feel warmish toward Jews\u00a0in return, preferring them to everyone except Buddhists, and they\u00a0dislike Evangelical Christians almost as much as the Christians\u00a0dislike them.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
