{"id":62975,"date":"2014-06-19T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=62975"},"modified":"2014-06-28T18:05:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-28T23:05:23","slug":"amidst-extreme-political-polarization-the-average-american-goes-unrepresented","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/06\/19\/amidst-extreme-political-polarization-the-average-american-goes-unrepresented\/","title":{"rendered":"Amidst Extreme Political Polarization, the Average American Goes Unrepresented"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/2014\/06\/12\/political-polarization-in-the-american-public\/#utm_source=feedly&amp;utm_reader=feedly&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=political-polarization-in-the-american-public\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> of 10,000 Americans by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pew Research Center<\/a> finds that political polarization is more extreme than it&#8217;s been anytime in the last 20 years. \u00a0The median (or middle) Democrat and Republican are farther away from each other politically than in 2004 or 1994. \u00a0&#8220;Today,&#8221; reports Pew, &#8220;92% of Republicans are to the right of the median Democrat, and 94% of Democrats are to the left of the median Republican.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/110.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62976\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/110-500x304.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"500\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/110-500x304.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/110.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Animosity has grown as well. \u00a0Over a quarter of Democrats and a third of Republicans see the other side as a &#8220;threat to the nation&#8217;s well being.&#8221; \u00a0In total, 38% of Democrats and 43% of Republicans judge the other side to be &#8220;very unfavorable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1a3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62977\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1a3-500x330.jpg\" alt=\"1a\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1a3-500x330.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1a3.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even more dramatically, it is the people at the extremes who are most likely to vote in elections and contribute to candidates. \u00a0Today&#8217;s America is highly polarized, then, but the voting booth is even more so.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1b4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62978\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1b4-500x307.jpg\" alt=\"1b\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1b4-500x307.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/06\/1b4.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pew concludes\u00a0by noting that, even given this polarization, the majority of Americans are in the middle and are open to compromise between parties. \u00a0These individuals, however, are less politically active, whether out of disinterest or distaste for the rancor, leaving politics to the most extreme among us.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/politics-and-law\/extreme-political-polarization-average-american-voter-84271\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
