{"id":62676,"date":"2014-05-28T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-05-28T14:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=62676"},"modified":"2014-06-09T00:01:23","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T05:01:23","slug":"distrust-for-black-entrepreneurs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/05\/28\/distrust-for-black-entrepreneurs\/","title":{"rendered":"Distrust for Black Entrepreneurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study finds that users of classified ads discriminate against people perceived as black. \u00a0Over a one year period, economists Jennifer Doleac and Luke Stein placed <a href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1615149\" target=\"_blank\">fake ads for used iPods<\/a> in local online classified. \u00a0They included photographs of the product held by a hand. \u00a0Some hands were light-skinned, others dark, and they also included a second potentially stigmatized identity, men with tattoos. \u00a0Otherwise the ads were all identical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/05\/18.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62677\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/05\/18-500x415.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"500\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/05\/18-500x415.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/05\/18-110x90.jpg 110w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/05\/18.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Doleac and Stein found that buyers were less likely to contact or make a deal with black sellers; they received 13% fewer responses and 17% fewer offers. \u00a0When they did receive an offer, the price suggested was slightly lower than that offered to presumably white sellers.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers also seemed to be significantly more suspicious of black sellers. \u00a0When interacting with a seller with brown skin,\u00a0Doleac and Stein write:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They are 17% less likely to include their name in e-mails,\u00a044% less likely to accept delivery by mail, and 56% more likely to express concern about\u00a0making a long-distance payment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Black sellers did especially poorly in the Northeast, when there wasn&#8217;t very much competition, and in markets that were racially isolated or had high crime rates.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, buyers discriminated against people with wrist tattoos at about the same rate, suggesting that both tattoos and brown skin inspire similar levels of distrust.<\/p>\n<p><em>H\/t to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonesabi\/status\/462456479962779649\" target=\"_blank\">Abi Jones<\/a> for the link.
