{"id":6251,"date":"2009-02-01T05:31:05","date_gmt":"2009-02-01T10:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=6251"},"modified":"2010-12-23T03:04:15","modified_gmt":"2010-12-23T08:04:15","slug":"hypotheses-for-the-rise-of-recognised-mental-disorders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/01\/hypotheses-for-the-rise-of-recognised-mental-disorders\/","title":{"rendered":"Hypotheses for the Rise of Recognized Mental Disorders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> recently published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/18\/health\/18psych.html?_r=1&amp;scp=2&amp;sq=dsm&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> on the evolving Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).\u00a0 The DSM is the official source for psychologists who are diagnosing patients with mental disorders.\u00a0 The article points out that the number of disorders in the manual has more than doubled since the 1950s:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6252\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/1218-nat-subpsychweb.jpg\" alt=\"1218-nat-subpsychweb\" width=\"366\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/1218-nat-subpsychweb.jpg 366w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/02\/1218-nat-subpsychweb-300x252.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hypothesis One:\u00a0 The DSM reflects an\u00a0increasingly sophisticated and exhuastive compendium of all possible mental disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Hypothesis Two:\u00a0 More psychological disorders\u00a0=\u00a0more people diagnosed with mental disorders = more money\u00a0is\u00a0siphoned off to\u00a0hospitals, treatment centers, drug companies, mental health professionals, social workers, school counselors, etc.\u00a0 (Scientists who are currently working on the next version of the DSM have agreed to restrict their income from drug makes to $10,000 a year or less.)<\/p>\n<p>Hypothesis Three:\u00a0 We are an increasingly rationalized society and all things are becoming increasingly listed, compiled, organized, and annotated.<\/p>\n<p>Hypothesis Four:\u00a0 What is considered a &#8220;problem&#8221;
