{"id":62098,"date":"2014-03-21T09:00:36","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T14:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=62098"},"modified":"2014-06-09T19:29:33","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T00:29:33","slug":"3rd-grade-teacher-reminds-boy-that-writing-is-for-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/03\/21\/3rd-grade-teacher-reminds-boy-that-writing-is-for-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd Grade Teacher Reminds Boy Writing is for Girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week Meredith Kleykamp <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kleykamp\/status\/446110840471949312\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> us a photo of a comment written on her 3rd grade son&#8217;s cursive homework. \u00a0The teacher wrote: &#8220;beautifully written! for a boy!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/1a.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-62099\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/1a-500x666.jpg\" alt=\"1a\" width=\"320\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/1a-500x666.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/03\/1a.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s the message here?<\/p>\n<p>Some argue that boys are slower than girls to develop the fine motor coordination that facilitates beautiful handwriting. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never interrogated that research, but let&#8217;s assume, for sake of argument, that that&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s true, then maybe Kleykamp&#8217;s son&#8217;s handwriting really is beautiful &#8220;for a boy.&#8221; \u00a0But does that make the teacher&#8217;s comment innocuous?<\/p>\n<p>Kleykamp <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kleykamp\/status\/446362454143295488\" target=\"_blank\">observes<\/a>: &#8220;&#8216;Beautifully written&#8217; is sufficient to convey praise.&#8221; \u00a0Then what additional message does the extra commentary send? \u00a0Given a social context in which boys are encouraged to be unlike girls, Christopher Knorr <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/knorr51\/status\/446375450734891008\" target=\"_blank\">thought<\/a> the subtext might be: &#8220;you will be forced to choose between your penmanship and your masculinity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scholars call these kinds of lessons the &#8220;hidden curriculum.&#8221; \u00a0Here&#8217;s another <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2012\/11\/16\/gender-in-the-hidden-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\">shocking example<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
