{"id":61207,"date":"2014-01-29T09:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T14:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=61207"},"modified":"2014-06-09T01:11:42","modified_gmt":"2014-06-09T06:11:42","slug":"talking-about-the-gender-pay-gap-how-language-obscures-privilege","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2014\/01\/29\/talking-about-the-gender-pay-gap-how-language-obscures-privilege\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking about the Gender Pay Gap: How Language Obscures Privilege"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have an ever-growing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociologysource.org\/nathanpalmer\/\" target=\"_blank\">collection<\/a> of ways in which men are frequently positioned as people and women as women. \u00a0We&#8217;re always on the lookout for new examples and sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociologysource.org\/nathanpalmer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Palmer<\/a>\u00a0recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociologysource.org\/home\/2012\/7\/30\/using-textbooks-to-teach-how-privilege-hides.html\" target=\"_blank\">highlighted<\/a>\u00a0a nice observation about how this happens in language.<\/p>\n<p>He asked readers to consider a quote from a <a href=\"http:\/\/books.wwnorton.com\/books\/detail.aspx?ID=4294969335\" target=\"_blank\">textbook<\/a>\u00a0(not to single Conley out, he&#8217;s using standard language and I use it as well in my own textbook). \u00a0Here&#8217;s the quote with the relevant part in bright white:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/01\/112.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-61208\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/01\/112.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/01\/211.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Applying an <a href=\"http:\/\/newint.org\/features\/2004\/11\/01\/men\/\" target=\"_blank\">insight<\/a> by sociologist Michael Kimmel, Palmer then updated the slide with slightly different language:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/01\/211.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2014\/01\/211.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If a dollar is the amount by which all other wages should be compared, then the first sentence centers men&#8217;s experiences and positions women as a deviation from that. \u00a0The second sentence switches that around.<\/p>\n<p>By switching the referent, this change in language shifts the center of the discussion from women&#8217;s disadvantage to men&#8217;s advantage. \u00a0Of course, there is <em>both<\/em> unfair disadvantage and advantage in this story, and we need to make both visible, but <em>always<\/em> talking in terms of the former makes women and their disadvantage the problem and hides the way that we need to be addressing men&#8217;s unfair advantage as well.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
