There are a lot of these comments here on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/12\/17\/help-my-eyeball-is-bigger-than-my-wrist-gender-dimorphism-in-frozen\/\" target=\"_blank\">SocImages<\/a>\u00a0and at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/12\/18\/anna_in_frozen_her_eyes_are_bigger_than_her_wrists.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slate<\/a>. Here\u2019s one example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Cartoons aren\u2019t meant to accurately portray people, EVER. They are meant to exaggerate features, so that they are more prominent and eye catching. So feminine features are made more feminine, and masculine features are made more masculine. \u2026 The less realistic the proportions, the more endearing and charming we find the character. The closer to realistic they are, the creepier\/blander they can become.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Flipping through IMDB\u2019s list of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/search\/title?genres=animation&amp;num_votes=1000,&amp;sort=user_rating,desc&amp;title_type=feature\" target=\"_blank\">top 500 animated movies<\/a>\u00a0reveals that Disney is certainly not alone in emphasizing the larger size of males. But there are a few successful counterexamples as well.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some good ones where the male and female characters are similarly proportioned. Note these are not just random male and female characters but couples (more or less).<\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0097814\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kiki\u2019s Delivery Service<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Hayao Miyazaki:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/125.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-60776\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/125.jpg\" width=\"368\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/125.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/125-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1777620\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dreams of Jinsha<\/a>:<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/28.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-60777\" alt=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/28.jpg\" width=\"405\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/28.jpg 579w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/28-500x272.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even some old Disney movies have romantic moments between physically-similar males and females. The original Snow White (from the 1937 movie) was paired with a Prince Charming whose wrists were barely bigger than hers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/34.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-60778\" alt=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/34.jpg\" width=\"427\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/34.jpg 677w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/34-500x373.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Disney\u00a0non-human animal pairs were sometimes quite physically matched. Consider Bambi and Faline (<em>Bambi<\/em>, 1942):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/42.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60779\" alt=\"4\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/42.jpg\" width=\"387\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or Dutchess and O\u2019Malley from\u00a0<em>Aristocats<\/em>\u00a0(1970) in which their exaggerated femininity and masculinity are not conveyed through extreme body-size difference:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/53.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60780\" alt=\"5\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/53.jpg\" width=\"349\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other realms of animation, Marge and Homer Simpson, the most durable couple in animation history, have very similar features: heads, eyes, noses, ears. His arms are fatter and neither of them really have wrists, but I\u2019d put this in the category of normal sex difference:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/62.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-60781\" alt=\"6\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/62.jpg\" width=\"418\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/62.jpg 653w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/62-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, Lucy and Charlie Brown were virtually identical if you think about it:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/71.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-60782\" alt=\"7\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/71.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/71.jpg 574w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/71-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/12\/71-500x503.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m open to other suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/23\/can-animated-boys-and-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\">Family Inequality<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/books-and-culture\/cartoons-exaggerate-gender-difference-73614\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\">Philip N.
