{"id":6068,"date":"2009-01-23T00:13:14","date_gmt":"2009-01-23T05:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=6068"},"modified":"2010-12-10T03:41:04","modified_gmt":"2010-12-10T08:41:04","slug":"a-historical-look-at-the-popularity-of-male-circumcision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/23\/a-historical-look-at-the-popularity-of-male-circumcision\/","title":{"rendered":"A Historical Look at the Popularity of Male Circumcision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In early American history, male circumcision was very uncommon.\u00a0 In the 1950s, however, about 90% of newborn boys were circumcised in the U.S.\u00a0 Today, the number is just over 50%.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icgi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Coalition for Genital Integrity<\/a> has put together <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icgi.org\/medicalization\/#Page_1\" target=\"_blank\">a slideshow<\/a> that traces developments in research and argumentation about male circumcision alongside rising and falling rates of the practice in the U.S., the U.K., and the world from 1832 till today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting how rates of circumcision change drastically over time in the U.S., but stay relatively stable (low)\u00a0in the U.K.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is also neat to see some of the arguments about circumcision that were made over time.\u00a0 For example, the long-standing belief that circumcision cured sexual excess (like wet dreams and masturbation), the explicit support for circumcision on the basis that it reduced sexual sensitivity (and that was good), and the belief that circumcision could cure\u00a0paralysis,\u00a0bedwetting, crossed eyes, deafness, tuburculosis, cancer of the tongue, and more.\u00a0 Dovetailing with American racism, in\u00a01894 an article argued that circumcising the &#8220;Negro&#8221; would reduce the rape of white women by black men.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In early American history, male circumcision was very uncommon.\u00a0 In the 1950s, however, about 90% of newborn boys were circumcised in the U.S.\u00a0 Today, the number is just over 50%.
