I’m in\u00a0Salon<\/a>\u00a0today responding to the “men’s rights activists” who spammed Occidental College’s anonymous sexual assault reporting form this week. \u00a0I, um, compare them to myself as a child:<\/p>\n

I thought I failed fourth grade.\u00a0 It\u2019s funny now that I\u2019m a tenured professor at an elite college, but it wasn\u2019t funny then.\u00a0 I lived a 45 minute walk from school and I ran home that day, tears in my eyes, clutching my unopened report card in my fist.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember much from my childhood, but I remember sitting on my front stoop and opening that horrible envelope.\u00a0 All Es for \u201cexcellent.\u201d\u00a0 Huh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back I realize that my sense that I\u2019d failed was based on how my teacher treated me.\u00a0 She was the first adult who didn\u2019t talk to me in a baby voice like I was the most specialest little girl in the whole world. \u00a0She treated me like a small adult instead of kissing my ass. \u00a0But it was terrifying because my ass had been kissed by everyone around me my whole life and, when I was demoted to \u201cregular person\u201d without any special privileges, it felt terrible and unfair.\u00a0 I was being persecuted.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

See how special I was? I’m the one with the inflated sense of self.<\/p>\n

The men attacking Occidental’s survivors are feeling something similar to me in fourth grade. \u00a0They’re angry that “women are being listened to… They\u2019re mad because they\u2019re not the only ones that matter anymore.” \u00a0They’re no longer being treated like they’re\u00a0the most specialest little girl in the whole world.<\/p>\n

It hurts when privileges are taken away, no matter how unearned. \u00a0But that doesn’t make it okay to be an asshole. \u00a0Just sayin’.<\/p>\n
