{"id":58111,"date":"2013-11-05T12:00:30","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T17:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=58111"},"modified":"2014-06-09T20:59:25","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T01:59:25","slug":"who-wants-a-christian-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/11\/05\/who-wants-a-christian-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Wants a Christian America?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Republicans tend to be Second Amendment absolutists.\u00a0 The NRA and their representatives in Congress haven\u2019t yet weighed in on the specific issue of, say, banning assault rifles in LAX, but they just might argue that such a law would be an unconstitutional infringement of the right to bear arms.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 First Amendment begins, \u201cCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,\u201d and when it comes to the Establishment Clause, Republican ideas become a bit more nuanced.\u00a0 Here are the results of a recent YouGov <a href=\"http:\/\/big.assets.huffingtonpost.com\/tabs_churchstate_0403042013.pdf\">survey<\/a>.\u00a0 The question was, \u201cWould you favor or oppose establishing Christianity as the official state religion in your state?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-58112\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/11.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Democrats and Independents oppose the establishment of Christianity \u2013 \u201cstrongly oppose\u201d is their modal response.\u00a0 But a majority of Republicans favor making their state a Christian state, and of those, most (two-thirds) are in the \u201cstrongly favor\u201d pew.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to say that Republicans are unaware of the Establishment Clause.\u00a0 \u201cBased on what you know, would you think that states are permitted by the constitution to establish official state religions, or not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/21.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-58113\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/21.jpg\" alt=\"2\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republicans are slightly more likely than Democrats to say that the Constitution does not permit state religions.\u00a0 They just think that on this one, the framers of the Constitution got it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are only a bit less enthusiastic about establishing Christianity as the official religion <em>of the entire country<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201cWould you favor or oppose a Constitutional amendment which would make Christianity the official religion of the United States?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/31.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-58114\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/11\/31.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A plurality, 46% \u2013 almost a majority \u2013 want to correct the Framers\u2019 careless omission by amending the Constitution.\u00a0\u00a0We can\u2019t know specifically what the people who favor this have in mind. Republicans themselves probably differ in their ideas. Maybe only symbolic gestures, like invoking Jesus\u2019s blessing on public events. Maybe public indoctrination \u2013 requiring Christian prayer and Bible reading in the public schools.
