{"id":57837,"date":"2013-10-23T14:34:47","date_gmt":"2013-10-23T19:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=57837"},"modified":"2013-10-23T17:38:34","modified_gmt":"2013-10-23T22:38:34","slug":"college-photoshops-black-mans-head-into-marketing-material-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/10\/23\/college-photoshops-black-mans-head-into-marketing-material-again\/","title":{"rendered":"College Photoshops Black Man&#8217;s Head into Marketing Material&#8230; Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: I may have been wrong about this one and, if so, I apologize. \u00a0The Univ. of Alabama has released a <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.al.com\/tuscaloosa\/2013\/10\/university_of_alabama_says_sit.html\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> saying that the image is not photoshopped, including a quote from the student saying &#8220;It&#8217;s kind of funny, but people are blowing it out of proportion a little bit.&#8221; \u00a0If anyone has further information on this story, please email it to socimages@thesocietypages.org.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2000, the University of Wisconsin &#8211; Madison was sued by a man named Diallo Shabazz. \u00a0Because the college wanted to present itself as a diverse place, Shabazz, a black man, had been featured in university marketing materials for several years. \u00a0That year, however, his face was <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/02\/doctoring-diversity-race-and-photoshop\/\" target=\"_blank\">photoshopped into a picture of a crowd<\/a> at a football game. \u00a0 He complained, but was blown off. \u00a0He&#8217;d had enough. \u00a0In his lawsuit, he asked not for a settlement, but for a &#8220;budgetary apology&#8221;: money dedicated to increasing the <em>actual<\/em> diversity of the campus.<\/p>\n<p>Today <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricTTung\/status\/392854949089918977\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\">@EricTTung<\/a> sent us another example of this kind of doctored diversity, currently the first slide on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ua.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">homepage<\/a> of the University of Alabama. \u00a0Do you see it?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/Screenshot_311.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-57838\" alt=\"Screenshot_31\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/Screenshot_311-500x361.png\" width=\"500\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/Screenshot_311-500x361.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/Screenshot_311.png 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How about now?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/BXOzfqKCMAARAlE-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-57839\" alt=\"BXOzfqKCMAARAlE (1)\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/BXOzfqKCMAARAlE-1-500x666.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/BXOzfqKCMAARAlE-1-500x666.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/10\/BXOzfqKCMAARAlE-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note the skin color of the African American man&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<p>As I&#8217;d <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/02\/doctoring-diversity-race-and-photoshop\/\" target=\"_blank\">written<\/a> in the post about Shabazz, this teaches us both that colleges believe that diversity is a useful commodity with which to market their institutions and that, &#8220;if real diversity isn\u2019t possible, cosmetic diversity will do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Recruitment of minorities to a mostly white campus: tricky.\u00a0 Addressing the systematic educational underinvestment in minorities prior to arriving: expensive.\u00a0 Retaining minorities in that environment: challenging.\u00a0 Photoshop: easy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
