{"id":57071,"date":"2013-09-11T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2013-09-11T17:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=57071"},"modified":"2013-10-31T03:46:43","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T08:46:43","slug":"nearly-one-in-five-adults-still-living-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/09\/11\/nearly-one-in-five-adults-still-living-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly One-in-Five Adults Still Living with Their Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Repeatedly at SocImages, we&#8217;ve offered data showing that the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2011\/09\/17\/troubling-trends-income-inequality-and-poverty\/\">middle<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/17\/whats-happening-to-the-middle-class\/\">class<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/03\/20\/beyond-growth-to-help-the-majority-we-must-restructure-the-economy\/\">is<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/03\/20\/beyond-growth-to-help-the-majority-we-must-restructure-the-economy\/\">shrinking<\/a>. \u00a0The rich are getting richer, while a rising percentage of Americans are having trouble making ends meet. \u00a0One measure of this is the <a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s13524-013-0196-2\" target=\"_blank\">number of households that include both adults and their adult children<\/a>. \u00a0About 12% of 25 to 44-year-olds lived with their parents in 1960, that dropped to 9% by 1980 and, in 2010, topped out at 17%. \u00a0Almost one-in-five adults were living with their parents at the turn of this decade.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.berkeley.edu\/2013\/07\/31\/still-living-with-your-parents-inequality-hits-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">two scenarios<\/a>, here, however. \u00a0One indicates the decreasing financial well-being of the elderly: parents move in with their children because they can&#8217;t afford to live alone, perhaps after retirement. \u00a0The other indicates the decreasing financial well-being of young and mid-life adults: children are moving in with their parents because they can&#8217;t get a good start to life.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that the first scenario is actually on the decrease, while the latter is on the increase. \u00a0The rise in co-residence is a consequence of the failure of our economy to integrate young people into jobs that pay a living wage. \u00a0Literally, a growing number of Americans &#8212; both young people and those in mid-life &#8212; can&#8217;t afford to leave the nest. \u00a0And, no, this didn&#8217;t start with the recession, it started in the &#8217;80s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/09\/15.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-57072\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/09\/15.jpg\" width=\"418\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve done a decent job trying to ensure that the elderly don&#8217;t live in poverty, it&#8217;s time to start working on making sure the rest of America doesn&#8217;t either.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/toddgorman\/status\/362795482822619137\" target=\"_blank\">@toddgorman<\/a> for the link! \u00a0Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/business-economics\/nearly-1-5-adults-still-living-home-parents-67614\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lisa-wade\/nearly-1-in-5-adults-are-still-living-at-home-_b_3910116.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Huffington Post<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
