Last week sociologist Philip Cohen, who blogs at Family Inequality, attended the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. \u00a0He noted<\/a> that the crowd was primarily Black; you can see participants in his photoset here<\/a>. \u00a0Are White people unenthusiastic about Civil Rights? \u00a0Perhaps. \u00a0There is evidence, in any case, that they are less likely than Black Americans to think that ongoing activism is necessary. \u00a0Cohen offers the results of a series of polls.<\/p>\n

Pew Research Data published in the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reveals that Black people are less likely than White people to think we’ve made \u00a0a lot of progress in the last 50 years. \u00a0They are also substantially more likely to believe that Blacks are treated less fairly than Whites in a wide range of circumstances:<\/p>\n

\"1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A\u00a0Gallup poll<\/a>\u00a0confirms that Black Americans are less likely than Whites to feel that race-related rights are “greatly improved.” \u00a0It also reveals that they are more than twice as likely to endorse new civil rights laws and government intervention to assure non-discrimination.<\/p>\n

\"2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Finally, the General Social Survey<\/a>\u00a0asks whether the fact that Blacks are worse off than Whites is due to mainly to discrimination or because of some other cause. \u00a0More than half of Blacks and a third of Whites say “yes, it’s discrimination.”<\/p>\n

\"3\"<\/a><\/p>\n

These data reveal that plenty of White Americans are concerned with racial equality, believe we have a long way to go, and support working to improve the treatment of Black Americans. There are also plenty of Black Americans that think things aren’t so bad. Nonetheless, there is a significant and persistent racial gap between the two groups.<\/p>\n
