In three previous posts, I showed that the company accomplishes this with commercials that associate its products with <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/14\/whimsical-branding-obscures-apples-troubled-supply-chain\/\">playfulness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/22\/sentimental-consumerism-the-apple-way\/\">sentimentality<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/30\/be-young-be-cool-be-happyas-an-apple-consumer\/\">cool youthfulness<\/a>. \u00a0The most prominent theme, however, and I suspect the most powerful aspect of the company\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emotionalbranding.com\/\">emotional branding<\/a> strategy, is the hope it cultivates in each of us of who we could be by virtue of using the company\u2019s products.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the whole of Apple\u2019s advertising campaigns suggest that, if we use their products,\u00a0we will be our hippest, coolest, most creative, intelligent, adventurous, socially engaged, and admired selves.\u00a0The idea of Apple users as standouts from the masses was introduced in the company\u2019s first commercial that aired only once, during the 1984 Super Bowl broadcast:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/r3EbwSOpw_A?hl=en_US&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>In this commercial Apple attacks the \u201cboring\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM\">IBM<\/a> and its \u201cmindless\u201d users controlled by a televised ruler in an Orwellian dystopia. \u00a0It also suggests that there is something special about the company and its products that will allow it, with the help of its customers, to change the course of history. A commodification of the counter-cultural ethos of the 1960s and \u201870s, this theme was prominent in the first few years of the company\u2019s advertising, but went dormant during Steve Jobs\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Jobs%23NeXT_Computer\">12-year hiatus<\/a>. It was resurrected in 1997 when <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Jobs%23Return_to_Apple\">Jobs returned to the helm of the company<\/a>. The now iconic and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Think_Different%23Reception_and_influence\">much revered commercial<\/a> titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Think_Different%23Television_commercials\">The Crazy Ones<\/a>\u201d launched the company\u2019s slogan \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Think_Different\">Think Different<\/a>\u201d into our vocabulary, and helped reposition the company, then floundering, onto its <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_Inc.%231998.E2.80.932005:_Return_to_profitability\">path to meteoric financial growth<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tjgtLSHhTPg?hl=en_US&amp;version=3\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>With ads like these, Apple doesn\u2019t suggest that one will become Mahatma Ghandi, Amelia Earhart, or Pablo Picasso per se, but that daring to be different (by purchasing an Apple product) opens up the possibility for one to do great things.<\/p>\n<p>This trend continues today in commercials that appeal to our desire to be valued and admired as artistically creative, culturally relevant, and intellectually engaging. Apple\u2019s commercial for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPhone_4S\">iPhone 4S<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siri\">Siri<\/a>, titled \u201cRock God\u201d, aired in 2012 and exemplifies this trend.<\/p>\n<p>Others, like the \u201ciPad is Amazing\u201d commercial that introduced the device in 2010, speak to how <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPad\">iPad<\/a> users will be intellectually, culturally, and professionally engaged and valuable people for using the device:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"560\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/JP8wKtFA4Io?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Commercials like these emphasize that Apple products are tools for self-development. By providing the opportunity to learn, create, and share, Apple products facilitate the expression of one\u2019s unique, individual, and socially valued identity. In <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/04\/03\/rising-rates-of-narcissism-and-being-unlimited\/\">today\u2019s digitally mediated world where social networking is the norm<\/a>, the promise of such narcissistic pursuits and outcomes is a key part of Apple\u2019s brand strategy. \u201cBe your best 21st century you!\u201d, recent ads seem to shout.<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, Apple products offer consumers the opportunity to increase their <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cultural_capital\">cultural capital<\/a>.\u00a0Social theorist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Bourdieu\">Pierre Bourdieu<\/a> defined cultural capital broadly as one\u2019s accumulated knowledge and skills. Commercials like those above for the iPhone and iPad suggest that Apple helps its customers bolster their cultural capital and raise their social standing. In a time when we are all tasked with marketing and selling ourselves to make it in the world, commercials like these amount to a message about personal and financial success.\u00a0This is a powerfully seductive promise.<\/p>\n<p>Is it any wonder that news of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/26\/business\/ieconomy-apples-ipad-and-the-human-costs-for-workers-in-china.html\">worker abuse<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/23\/technology\/23apple.html?pagewanted=all\">poisoning<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2013\/aug\/05\/woman-nearly-died-making-ipad?CMP=twt_gu\">workplace suicide<\/a> fails to compromise the company\u2019s financial standing? In fact, in the immediate aftermath of negative reports about its Chinese supply chain in early 2012, Apple went on to post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/pr\/library\/2012\/04\/24Apple-Reports-Second-Quarter-Results.html\">record sales of iPhones and iPads<\/a>. Most recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinalaborwatch.org\/news\/new-459.html\">a report by China Labor Watch<\/a> that documents unlawful, unsafe, and abusive work conditions at <a href=\"http:\/\/pegatroncorp.com\/\">Pegatron<\/a> facilities throughout China has been popularly interpreted by the tech community and mainstream journalists as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/future_tense\/2013\/07\/29\/apple_cheap_iphone_5_rumors_leak_exposes_human_rights_abuses_plastic_back.html\">exciting news that a \u201ccheap iPhone\u201d is on its way<\/a>. As I pointed out in my <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/08\/14\/whimsical-branding-obscures-apples-troubled-supply-chain\/\">first post<\/a>\u00a0 in this series, Apple\u2019s ability to obscure with its brand promise the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipe.org.cn\/upload\/report-it-v-apple-ii.pdf\">environmental degredation<\/a> and human rights abuses within its supply chain is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialtheory.info\/commodity_fetishism.htm\">commodity fetishism<\/a> at both its best and its worst.
