Everything."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all know &#8212; because we are being constantly reminded &#8212; that we are, collectively, getting fat. \u00a0Americans are at the forefront of the trend, but it is a transnational one. Apparently, it is also transspecies: pets, wild animals, and laboratory animals are also gaining weight. \u00a0Here&#8217;s some country-level data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/economix.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/23\/the-world-is-fat\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/08\/Screenshot_114.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56731\" alt=\"Screenshot_1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/08\/Screenshot_114.png\" width=\"544\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/08\/Screenshot_114.png 544w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/08\/Screenshot_114-500x382.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2013\/08\/Screenshot_114-230x175.png 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><\/a>In an excellent review of the existing literature, David Berreby at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeonmagazine.com\/being-human\/david-berreby-obesity-era\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aeon<\/a>\u00a0skewers the idea that a simple, victim-blaming &#8220;calories in, calories out&#8221; model can explain this extraordinary transnational, transspecies rise in overweight and obese individuals. \u00a0I won&#8217;t summarize his argument here, except to simply list the casual contenders for which there is good evidence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sleeplessness<\/li>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<li>Viruses<\/li>\n<li>Bacteria<\/li>\n<li>Industrial chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Heavy metals<\/li>\n<li>Electric lights<\/li>\n<li>Air conditioning<\/li>\n<li>Famine in previous generations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you ever want to have an opinion on fat again, read Berreby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeonmagazine.com\/being-human\/david-berreby-obesity-era\/\" target=\"_blank\">now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
